Commander William Weah was the president of the Central African state of Gindra since 1997. His ethnicity was that of the Gindran majority ethnic group, the Gunda.
Biography[]
At some point by 1997, William Weah managed to orchestrate a successful coup d'état against the Gindran government and establish a military junta. As his first official act as the head of state, Weah pronounced himself president for life.
Weah's rule resulted in an oppressive regime, the policies of which were often targeted against ethnic minorities in Gindra. These included an attempted genocide of one of these ethnic minorities, the Boias, which ultimately led to the rise of the Gindra Liberation Front (GLF), commanded by the charismatic "General" Augustine Eguabon. Weah's failure to stop the GLF led to a civil war in Gindra, which was still on-going in 2002.
