"Hmm, I don't remember that one. It mustn't be that important."
This article is about a subject from outside Hideo Kojima's core "Metal Gear Saga." Its canonicity within the continuity is disputed, therefore reader discretion is advised.[?]

The Vodomerka (Russian: водомерка) or Water Strider was a three legged unmanned gear that belonged to the Delaware-based PMC, Desperado Enforcement LLC. and the Colorado-based PMC, World Marshal Inc. Developed in Russia under the Alekhine OKB (the OKB responsible for ekranoplan, or ground-effect vehicles), their appearance was similar to pond-skaters, although their height was comparable to an average human being. Also similar to pond-skaters, they also were capable of skating on water. They were equipped with jets because the UG's creators thought it was more fit to have the mech outrun enemy cyborgs instead of simply outgunning them. Their main weapons were a HF machete and a built-in flamethrower, the latter of which was installed because cyborgs couldn't block flamethrower technology, with its gel fuel being injected with monomethylhydrazine in order to increase the resulting flame jet's temperature to 2000 degrees to ensure it pierced through cyborg armor.

Several Vodomerkas were utilized in the sewer system of Denver, Colorado, to guard against intruders. Sam took out several while trying to locate a secret entrance to World Marshal HQ.

Vodomerkas were also utilized in the Guadalhara sewers leading to a Desperado-owned research facility. Maverick operative Raiden infiltrated the sewers to locate the facility, discovered their presence. Raiden had initially heard of their development and existence from a military news site, although he wasn't able to know the full details due to it being in Russian. They patrolled the area containing the actual entryway for the lab, which was disguised as part of the wall. Although the Vodomerka's presence, alongside Mastiffs and Dwarf Gekko UGs, were initially believed to be for guard duty, it was later discovered that they were actually present to collect VR simulation data for UGs. They were normally not allowed in Mexican or American borders, due to the ATT being passed, although it managed to enter due to loopholes in the treaty.

Behind the scenes[]

The Vodomerka (アメンボ Amenbo) appears as an enemy UG in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. "Vodomerka" is the Russian name for water strider bugs, also known as pond skaters, and is occasionally misspelled as Vodomjerka, as seen in both the Trophy/Achievement description for "Pond Scum," and a Codec conversation between Raiden and Boris. However, Boris refers to them by the correct name in a second Codec conversation.
