A vending machine is an automated machine that provides drinks as well as other items such as snacks, beverages, cigarettes, and lottery tickets upon being supplied with money, credit card, or a specially designed card. They were first developed in England during the early 1880s and dispensed post cards. In some cases, they were privately owned.
Usage[]
During World War II, several American-owned battleships contained vending machines that supplied cigarettes, soft drinks, and even ice cream, which were nicknamed "gedunk bars." Sea-bound factories were even established to create ice cream rations specifically for ships too small to carry gedunk bars, which produced 5,000 gallons per hour and even took into account the sailor's choice.
Drebin 893 had a personal vending machine aboard his Stryker that contained Narc Soda.

Denver, Colorado featured several World Marshal Inc.-owned vending machines in the the city, which contained Electrolyte Packs. The same vending machines were also found within the World Marshal Inc. Headquarters.

Behind the scenes[]
TGS 2006 vending machine logo
In the 2006 Tokyo Game Show flash website for Kojima Productions, it utilized a vending machine that acted as a subtle means of promoting upcoming games. The exact contents utilized for the vending machine varies between the language option of the site. In the Japanese version of the site, there is a green can with a shield on it (reflecting Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops), a pink, blue, and brown can (reflecting Lunar Knights DS), a red and brown can (reflecting Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots), a black can (reflecting Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel), a white can (reflecting Kabushiki Baibai Trainer Kabutore), an orange bottle with the FOX logo on it (reflecting Kojima Productions in general), a green bottle (reflecting Hide-chan Radio), and a blue bottle (reflecting Kojipro Report). In the English site, the Digital Graphic Novel and Kabushiki Baibai Trainer Kabutore cans are removed and instead replaced with additional cans of Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid 4, the Lunar Knights DS can is moved to the bottom of where the extra Portable Ops can was located, the Kojima Productions bottle is removed altogether, and the two remaining bottles are kept as is (albeit the green bottle is changed to Hideo Kojima, while the content remained the same).
During Chapters R-03 and R-04 of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, using Zandatsu on the vending machines will supply the player with a free electrolyte pack.
