This article is about the Ohio-class submarine. You may be looking for the dummy oil tanker USS Discovery (tanker).

The USS Discovery was an Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine that was deployed during the Shadow Moses Incident in 2005.

Description[]

Ohio-class ships are the largest submarines built for the United States Navy. They are also known as the 726 Class or Trident Class, after the payload it delivers, which is 24 Trident I C4 or Trident II D5 ballistic missiles. Other armaments are 4 Midship 21"(53cm) torpedo tubes firing Mk. 48 torpedoes. It offers the quietest ride, coupled with sophisticated guidance systems and sonar. Powered by a pressurized water reactor (PWR) that drives steam turbines to a single propeller shaft. It can achieve depths of over 800 ft.(244m) while traveling at over 25 knots, or 28.7 mph (46.3km/h). A crew of 150 enlisted men and around a dozen officers usually mans the submarine, operating in two separate shifts.

History[]

In February 2005, the Discovery was utilized by the United States Government in the Shadow Moses Incident. During this time, the vessel possessed a VR simulation suite on board, for the purposes of combat training.[1] The Discovery was used to stealthily approach the terrorist-occupied Shadow Moses Island, and then launch a one-man SDV towards it, which housed infiltration expert Solid Snake. Mission support personnel Roy Campbell, Naomi Hunter and Mei Ling assisted Snake remotely from the submarine via radio. In the event that Snake failed in his mission to destroy Metal Gear REX, the Discovery was authorized to launch a nuclear strike against Shadow Moses.[2]

Unconfirmed history[]

The following information has been detailed in official Konami-licensed media, written by various external authors. Its status in the Metal Gear canon is unconfirmed.[?]

The Discovery was known under the codename "SSGN-732 Discovery", and also known as "Sea Wolf Den Mother."[3]

Behind the scenes[]

In the revised opening for the remake The Twin Snakes, the USS Discovery was shown to contain biometrics equipment, as Roy Campbell had to put his hand on a scanner while inserting an Optical disc that's heavily implied to contain map data for Shadow Moses and personnel files on the renegade FOXHOUND members.
