Chokuto/Ninjato[]

Don't know why this keeps getting added, but the cross-section of Grey Fox's sword is totally wrong for a Chokuto (see here for a comparison), and the idea that is is one comes only from an unofficial guide which apparently decided it was a 10 century sword of which almost no examples still exist. It's pretty obviously supposed to be the classic fictional straight-blade "Ninjato" ninja sword. It also has a hamon (white edge to the blade) which a Chokuto wouldn't do because it wasn't made using the differential hardening process developed for later Japanese swords. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.27.148.200 (talkcontribs)

Well, the strategy guide is actually titled the "Official Mission Handbook," but the guide is so littered with contradictions, and uses so much artistic license in its character backstories, that the wiki doesn't use it as a reliable source (hence the "unconfirmed history" sections on some pages). In other words, the Chokuto reference should just be removed. As for calling it a "Ninjato," it may be best to leave this out too, unless it was actually named as such, or maybe add a brief note to "Behind the scenes" to specify how it conforms to the style of the fictional Ninjato. --Bluerock (talk) 13:55, December 11, 2013 (UTC)
EDIT: Just checked the history page. It was initially changed by 62.83.163.164, with the comment, "Ninjato" as a straight-bladed sword is not a traditional weapon. The correct term for straight-bladed sabers is "Chokuto". --Bluerock (talk) 13:57, December 11, 2013 (UTC)
That's wrong, Chokuto refers to early (10th century or so) steel blades made before differential hardening; calling any straight-bladed sword a Chokuto would be like calling a Western straight sword a Gladius no matter who made it or what it looked like. Ninjato (technically Ninja-to) are fictional differentially hardened straight-bladed "ninja swords" which are an invention of pop culture, IIRC originally invented by Americans during the ninja craze in the 70s and 80s and enthusiastically adopted by the Japanese in their own depictions of ninja. Grey Fox's blade is differentially hardened (it has a wavy white edge to the blade), which would make it a Ninjato.
Most likely whoever wrote the guide just looked up a Japanese term for a straight sword to try to look clever, and didn't notice it was the name of a specific type which didn't match the one in the game. 2.27.148.200 14:07, December 11, 2013 (UTC)
The guide actually claims it was a replica, so it wouldn't technically be a Chokuto in any case. --Bluerock (talk) 13:36, December 12, 2013 (UTC)
