Stealth mats, also referred to as camouflage mats, are mats used to provide camouflage towards soldiers. They can be accessible in any terrain.

History[]

During the formation of FOXHOUND as an official U.S. Army unit, the FOXHOUND members often utilized camouflage mats during missions.

Peace Walker Incident[]

In the aftermath of the Peace Walker Incident of 1974, cumulating in trying to stop Paz Ortega Andrade from launching a nuke at the United States with Metal Gear ZEKE, Big Boss and his mercenary group, the Militaires Sans Frontières, developed a stealth mat via their R&D team as well as several specialists of metamaterials technology. They developed a further improvement shortly thereafter. It was a disposable mat that turned the user invisible when prone or against a wall.

Zanzibar Land Disturbance[]

Zanzibar Land, during the Zanzibar Land Disturbance, utilized the Phantom 07 brand camouflage mat for use during conflict, although they actually needed to crawl under the mat instead of simply put it over themselves. Solid Snake, while infiltrating the nation, made use of these mats during his mission.

According to the linear notes included in the Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake Original Soundtrack, the stealth mat was created by accident due to a glitch.[1]
