The Vz.61 Scorpion is a Czechoslovakian-made submachine gun designed in the 1950s and first put into service in 1961.
Overview[]
Compared to many contemporary submachine guns, the Scorpion is not very powerful, with poor penetration; however, it is very small and controllable, making it extremely useful in cramped quarters. While the military has largely supplanted it with larger, more powerful submachine guns, the Scorpion remains an extremely effective weapon for law enforcement and counterterrorist operations, where the low penetration of the .32 ACP round is seen as an advantage rather than a liability.

Behind the scenes[]
Many GRU soldiers carry the Scorpion in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In-game, it is equipped with a laser sight and fires .32 ACP ammunition from a 30-round magazine. It is capable of semi and full automatic fire. It is very light, weighing in at 1.3 kg (2.9 lbs) and takes about 2 seconds to reload. While Naked Snake cannot aim down the iron sights, the laser sight makes up for this, making the Scorpion a useful "run and gun" weapon. The weapon is also standard issue for the flying platform pilots as well as motorbike crews. In real life, the Scorpion used 10 or 20-round magazines; 30-round magazines, while not totally implausible, were not manufactured.
Snake can obtain the Scorpion in Groznyj Grad. It is located in a locked armory in the East Wing of the Weapons Lab. The armory doors automatically open for Major Raikov and the other guards in the area, but not for the scientists working in the lab upstairs. Snake can take advantage of this to enter the room by either following closely behind a guard as he walks into the room, or by dragging a guard's body up to one of the doors. The doors will also open for Snake if he is wearing Raikov's Officer uniform. Alternately, Snake can unlock the armory doors with special radio frequencies: 141.06 unlocks the west door, and 142.81 unlocks the east door. In Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, a Scorpion can be found at the Supply Depot.
- "The Scorpion. A Czechoslovakian-made submachine gun. Uses 32ACP ammunition. Magazine size is 20 rounds. Equipped with a laser pointer. 1.3kg"
- ―Scorpion description in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
- "A small submachine gun designed and produced in Czechoslovakia. It is extremely compact, easy to handle, and uses light .32ACP ammo, resulting in an excellent sense of control in full-auto mode, despite its small size.
Designed to be used by special forces and police in Warsaw Pact countries, this SMG has also been adopted by many international terrorists, giving it a high profile among Western countries as well." - ―Scorpion's weapon description from Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
In Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the Vz61 is named Uz61.
- "A Czechoslovakia-made submachine gun developed as a self-defense weapon for vehicle crews. Its ultra-compact design is tailored for use in cramped vehicle compartments.
The Uz61's small frame makes it incredible easy to handle and a wide effective AUTO AIM range. While it boasts low recoil and a relatively high rate of fire, its ammunition is rather underpowered, requiring multiple shots and a careful aim to be effective.
(Ranks 3-4) Equipped with a limited-use suppressor. The suppressor will eventually wear out, so use it prudently." - ―Uz61's weapons description from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
