Pyro Bison was a pyromaniac member of Black Chamber who specialized in the use of a flamethrower.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about the past of the man who would become Pyro Bison. At some point in his life, he joined Black Chamber and was given the codename of Pyro Bison.
When the special forces unit was massacred in an ambush at the hands of FOXHOUND in 2000, he was one of the five members of the unit to have survived. Bison became a mercenary, biding his time before the remnants of Black Chamber had their chance at taking revenge on FOXHOUND and the man responsible for orchestrating the attack, known to them only as "Anonymous".
Galuade Incident[]
Black Chamber eventually got their chance in 2002, when they aided the Gindra Liberation Front in the hijacking of a C-5 Galaxy transport plane carrying Metal Gear GANDER en route to South America.
Bison encountered Solid Snake at the basement of Galuade's power plant, while Snake was attempting to sabotage the plant's main turbine. After being defeated by Snake, Bison explained to him Black Chamber's history, their creation, and their eventual betrayal, and then accused Snake of being a sinner, commenting on how many people he has killed so far on his mission, and revealed the history of Black Chamber and its relationship with FOXHOUND. In his final act of revenge, Bison told Snake that a fifth, hitherto unaccounted for survivor of the Black Chamber massacre from two years ago was planted among Snake's mission support team, who had been leaking details of Snake's progress to Black Chamber throughout the mission. He then self-immolated by rupturing the fuel tanks of his flamethrower. Engulfed in flames he considered to be purifying, Bison died while crying out in an apparent ecstasy.
Personality and traits[]
Bison was a pyromaniac obsessed with his massive flamethrower, despite it being a cumbersome and unpractical weapon. He wore a custom-made body suit made of flameproof material lined with ceramic plating, and used a special blend of fuel which he stated burned more purely and fiercely than any other flame; together, the suit and fuel tank weighed at least 300 lbs, indicating that he had considerable strength. Although Bison's body suit was sturdy enough to protect him from small arms fire, it did not cover the fuel tanks on his back, leaving them exposed and vulnerable. Allegedly, Bison also had the ability to fly using his flamethrower for propulsion.[1]
A considerable portion of Bison's body was covered in disfiguring burn scars, though how and when exactly he obtained them is unknown. Owing to his pyromania, he apparently had some masochistic traits, as evidenced by his final words when committing suicide by rupturing his flamethrower tank and his ecstatic screams due to the sensation.
Behind the scenes[]
Pyro Bison (パイロ・バイソン Pairo Baison?) appears in Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, in which he is fought by the player during a boss battle. He is the only boss character whose past is not revealed. When he tells Snake the number of soldiers that he has killed in his mission thus far, the number he lists is that of the enemy soldiers killed by the player during the game. The lowest possible number is two, since there is no way to defeat Slasher Hawk or Marionette Owl without killing them.
Two elements of Bison's design appeared in later canonical games, primarily Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, in the designs of the Cobra Unit members. Similar to the way Bison examines the sins of Solid Snake as a kill count, the Sorrow forces Naked Snake to face all those he has killed. Additionally the flamethrower was used as a weapon by soldiers but in a more extravagant capacity by the Fury. Similar to Bison's flamethrower type, The Fury also used his own fuel for his flamethrower, rocket fuel in this case, that ensured that they burn longer. On a similar note, similar to the Fury, he also alludes to fire being used in the afterlife, although the latter doesn't do it to the same extent.
