Why did Paz Ortega Andrade fear disobeying Cipher in the Metal Gear series? toggle section
Paz Ortega Andrade's fear of disobeying Cipher in the Metal Gear series stemmed from her belief that it would lead to a fate worse than death. She was the sole agent to have met Cipher personally and received his direct orders. Additionally, Zero's directive to execute Cipher's plan of defaming Big Boss and MSF as threats to global peace intensified her fear.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Pacifica Ocean was raised in the United States from a very young age.[3] She was taken in by Cipher after becoming an orphan, and felt that she owed him her life. However, her loyalty was partially born out of fear, as she believed that disobeying Cipher would result in "a fate far worse than death". She was also the only agent that had actually met Cipher face-to-face and received orders from him directly, in this case, to contact Big Boss, with other agents only gaining their orders via proxies. She was eventually trained to become a triple agent for the organization, later operating within both the CIA and the KGB. In order to become a Cipher agent she endured many hardships including extreme training, starvation and days spent without sleep. Some of her compatriots died and others betrayed her and left her for dead while she did exactly the same to them. By overcoming these hardships she proved herself to Zero to be the right candidate to strike back at Snake for abandoning him and his organization.

With Cipher's resources, Pacifica adopted the identity of "Paz Ortega Andrade" (the name Paz meaning "Peace" in Spanish), a 16-year-old Costa Rican high school student who cherished peace and was studying the nation's Peace Constitution under the guidance of professor Ramón Gálvez Mena of the yet-to-be-sanctioned United Nations University for Peace.[5] In reality, Gálvez was a fellow agent of the KGB with whom Pacifica was ostensibly serving the Latin American interests of the Soviet Union.[6] Similar to her true past, "Paz" was also an orphan whose mother had died when she was still very young and had lost her grandparents during the Costa Rican Civil War, influencing her supposed passionate hatred of war.

In 1974, "Paz Ortega Andrade" was held captive by the CIA mercenary group Peace Sentinel, after she had stumbled upon a supply port facility north of Puerto Limon, while "searching for a lost friend." She later found out that her friend had also been captured, due to accidentally recording a conversation of The Boss AI on her Walkman while bird watching. Paz was eventually able to escape, although her friend did not make it out in the process. After she had shown Gálvez the tape, along with cuts apparently inflicted on her during captivity, she and the professor entreated the Militaires Sans Frontières and asked Snake (Big Boss) and Kazuhira Miller to eliminate the armed force and restore peace to the nation. While MSF were conducting their missions, Paz hid at Ciudad Colon, a school where Gálvez told her she could stay until the conflict had settled down. Miller also rigged Snake's radio to allow contact with her while Paz herself was allowed by Gálvez to utilize his radio in his room to contact the group.[7]

Paz was later recaptured by Peace Sentinel leader Hot Coldman and was taken to a U.S. missile base in Nicaragua, where she was placed in a cell. She was later relocated to the control room where Coldman intended to launch a nuclear strike on MSF's Mother Base, via the unmanned Peace Walker weapon. Before he could do so, Professor Gálvez (in reality, a KGB spy name Vladimir Zadornov) stormed the facility with a squad of Soviet troops, betraying Coldman, with whom he had secretly been in league. Zadornov planned to have Peace Walker instead launch into Cuba to ruin America's reputation, and attempted to convince Paz to shoot Coldman with his Makarov pistol. However, despite Coldman's previous actions toward her, she could not bring herself to shoot him, so Zadornov pulled the trigger himself. Paz was soon rescued by the MSF and their Sandinista allies, while Zadornov and a dying Coldman were taken into their custody.

Paz later broke down into tears on board Kaz's MSF chopper due to the intense events of the mission, with Kaz lecturing her that she shouldn't pick up a weapon unless she knew how to use it, as aiming a gun itself didn't make it a deterrent. Paz calmed down enough to thank the MSF for completing their mission. However, Paz heavily underestimated Coldman's madness, and Coldman had successfully reinitiated Peace Walker's launch on his deathbed, forcing the MSF to destroy Peace Walker directly in a final battle to prevent all out nuclear war. After the fiasco, Paz returned to Costa Rica briefly, but ended up returning to Mother Base due to the fact that she couldn't attend school as Gálvez, who had funded her schooling, had been arrested by the MSF as well as due to the KGB's involvement in paying for her tuition. When Kaz brought this up to Big Boss, Big Boss agreed, although under the condition that Kaz watch over Paz as he felt it wouldn't be easy for her to adjust to the current environment.[8] In addition, while on Mother Base, Paz also suggested to Big Boss that he supply her with a job, and suggested that he make her a cook, citing her decent cooking skills, as well as making Costa Rican recipes when she was used to the job.[9] Having successfully infiltrated Mother Base, her real mission began.

During her time with MSF following the fiasco, Paz adopted a pet cat, which she named "Nuke", as a sardonic hint to her true nature. She also briefly participated in a soccer match and went fishing with Chico and some of the mercenaries. She also briefly came down with an illness while onboard Mother Base, with Miller and Strangelove trying to help her recover (although she drove them off due to Miller trying to demonstrate how to use suppositories as well as Strangelove trying to put an "Indian miracle cure" on Paz's chest, respectively). While she continued to play the role of an innocent student of peace, she secretly helped Zadornov to escape Mother Base's brig on multiple occasions, one of which involved luring a guard away by having him taste some of the food that she, Cécile, and Amanda cooked in the Mess Hall.[10][11]

However, Paz eventually began to respect the MSF, finding it brought her a semblance of peace and realizing it brought together former enemies. However, she knew this peace would not last. She considered lying to Cipher about the progress of the modifications to Metal Gear ZEKE in order to enjoy "Peace Day," but another Cipher affiliate, whom Paz believed was an undercover agent, revealed the completion of ZEKE before she had the chance. Chico also discovered her working on ZEKE, so she was forced to enact her plan.

After Big Boss killed Zadornov in self-defense following the KGB spy's final escape attempt, Pacifica Ocean hijacked Metal Gear ZEKE, much to the surprise of Big Boss and Miller. After explaining the history of Big Boss and Zero after The Boss's death and continuously referring to Cipher's plans to ultimately control weapons and humanity, she requested that Big Boss rejoin Cipher, or rather, obey the will of Cipher, promising to let him keep command of MSF as their deterrent until their new world order was in place. When Big Boss refused, however, Pacifica decided to do the other aspect of her orders: Pacifica had set the coordinates of ZEKE's launch strike towards the East Coast of the United States in an attempt to frame Big Boss and the Militaires Sans Frontières in being an extremist cult, forcing Big Boss to fight and defeat Pacifica and ZEKE. After declaring to Big Boss that his path was to experience fleeting peace, where people would use him, abuse him, then throw him away as if a cancer to society, Pacifica's body was thrown into the ocean from the force of ZEKE's explosion, with Big Boss only expressing remorse and pity for Paz as she fell. Big Boss also learned from Miller his role in Paz and Cipher's plans.

Following Pacifica's defeat, Snake confided to Chico that he had some doubts as to whether she had indeed died, due to her ejection from ZEKE's cockpit, and the fact that she had still been in her scuba gear when she landed in the ocean. Before the fight, however, she left behind several tapes of her diary, causing them to suspect that Paz's loyalty to Cipher may have been wavering.

She also recorded some tapes documenting her actions prior to, during, and after joining MSF, including a report on Big Boss and Miller, as well as calls to Cipher.

Ground Zeroes Incident[]

True to Big Boss's suspicions, Paz had indeed survived, and was later rescued by a Belizean fisherman. However, Cipher subsequently had her held for interrogation at Camp Omega, on the southern tip of Cuba, after becoming suspicious of her loyalty. In actuality, however, XOF leader, Skull Face, planned to interrogate Paz to find the location of Zero and kill him, as Paz was the only one to have had direct contact with him after his "grand experiment."

PazMGSV

In March 1975, Chico was captured while trying to rescue Paz from the facility, but their reunion was marred by Skull Face's brutal interrogation and torture methods, which consisted of beatings and rape from soldiers on Skull Face's orders. Paz initially did not wish to speak to Chico in fear that Skull Face would use him as leverage against her. But the boy's presence ended up giving her hope that she would somehow make it out alive along with Chico, and grew to care for him. After several days, Paz gave up Zero's location, thinking that it would save Big Boss.[12] She then revealed that her employer was at Hell's Kitchen at 10th Avenue of Manhattan, more specifically in a building disguised to look like other buildings and in a floor that officially didn't exist, also giving all entry points and that it was given disinformation of being a building holding a violent gang to dissuade anyone but Cipher members from going in. Unfortunately for her, she learned that Skull Face still intended to kill Big Boss in addition to Zero, with the deformed man implying that his motives simply stemmed from a nihilistic view of nature taking course. Afterwards, Skull Face had her implanted with two bombs, one in her abdomen and another "in a place [MSF]'d never look," anticipating that Big Boss would come to rescue the two prisoners. He then falsely claimed to Chico that he had overseen the painless demise of Paz, and supplied him with a tape recording as "proof."

Shortly afterwards, Skull Face, after taunting Chico about the minimal chances he had of escaping the facility and the American-owned soil, with neither the Cubans nor the Americans aiding him, promised to let him and Paz go only if he submitted to interrogation. Skull Face proceeded to torture him for information, specifically for information relating to Mother Base and MSF, as Skull Face and Big Boss go way back. Chico refused to answer, even telling him to repeatedly hit him when he started beating Paz. Skull Face eventually saw through his tactic and instead had her stripped to reveal how "repulsive" Paz actually was with her scars. He then ordered one of his soldiers to rape Paz in front of Chico in an attempt to force him to talk. Later on, he forced Chico into Paz's cell and asked him whether he "found her sweet or sour." Chico was then tasked to have sex with Paz or else he'd be "strung up next." Paz herself encouraged him to do the former knowing there was no way around it, saying that she knew he wouldn't hurt her. After being thrown back into his animal cage, Paz admitted that she missed him, surprising Chico as he thought she didn't want to talk to him. Paz then kissed Chico and attempted to embrace him, but he ultimately refused. Paz then asked Chico if "[he wanted] to do it here?" At a later point in time, Paz found out that Chico revealed the stats of Mother Base, the numbers within MSF, as well as ZEKE's existence, though Skull Face admitted that he was only "halfway there." Chico was forced into torturing Paz. She didn't talk, however, causing him to break down, with Paz yelling "coward" and "traitor."

Shortly thereafter, Big Boss infiltrated the camp in order to rescue both Paz and Chico, and gather more intelligence on Cipher. By this time, Paz's hair had been cropped short as part of her interrogation, and she had been chained up by her hands in the boiler room of the camp's administration building. Chico, after being rescued by Big Boss, informed Snake of Paz's apparent fate, though Snake was skeptical. He confiscated the tape depicting Paz's supposed last moments, and deduced her location from the sounds of the area. Paz was later located by Snake and placed on board the chopper. Chico later discovered the surgical cuts on Paz's stomach, with Snake correctly deducing that a bomb was placed inside her. Emergency surgery was carried out by the medic on board without anesthetic in order to remove one of the bombs, causing great distress and pain for the conscious Paz who fainted afterwards.

Paz eventually regained consciousness when she was interrogated by an angered Miller following an attack on Mother Base, during which she revealed there was a second bomb inside of her that the MSF had been unaware of. She then sacrificed herself by jumping out of the helicopter, exploding in midair, sending the chopper out of control and into the path of a XOF chopper.[13]

A phantom of Paz.

Nine years later, Venom Snake encountered what appeared to be Paz in Mother Base. Miller and Ocelot would elaborate that Paz seemingly gained amnesia due to trauma. After collecting memento photos relating to Paz, Venom Snake encountered her once again, only to find that she was suddenly in a panic. Paz explained that there was still a bomb inside of her, then slowly pulled out the bomb from her stomach. The bomb then exploded and Venom Snake was seemingly caught in the blast only to find himself waking up unharmed. The "hospital room" was revealed to have actually been under construction and only consisted of a metal floor. A butterfly passed by him but it mysteriously vanished when he grabbed it and opened his hand. Having realized that Paz had truly passed away nine years ago, Venom Snake finally came to terms with her death. It was heavily implied that what Venom Snake witnessed was a phantom of Paz, and that he had experienced an elaborate and vivid hallucination (Miller and Ocelot did not really appear either) due to his grief (and possibly regret due to not being thorough enough to save her) over losing Paz; in which it was akin to the feeling of a phantom pain.

Name[]

Pacifica Ocean is a pun of the name "Pacific Ocean," the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. Pacific itself is derived from pax, which is Latin for "peace." The Latin word eventually became the Spanish and Portuguese word paz.

Personality and traits[]

As "Paz", Pacifica Ocean behaved in an innocent manner, and acted as a genuine lover and believer of the concept of peace. Secretly, however, she harbored no real belief in peace, due to man's violent nature. Possessing pale skin and a perm, Paz was highly aware of her youthful appearance, as she intentionally posed as a teenager to play the convincing role of the "child of peace." In correlation with her disbelief towards the concept of true peace, she claimed that the "peace" sign was an ironic symbol in reference of the letter "V" standing for "Victory." During the Peace Walker Incident, and presumably during her first meeting with Zero/Cipher, she had shoulder-length wavy blonde hair. However, by the time of her imprisonment at the United States Naval Prison Facility in Cuba up to her death, her hair had been shaved to the extent of looking like a crew cut, presumably as a form of dehumanization since Chico's head wasn't shaved during his captivity.

Unveiling her allegiance to Cipher, Paz's true nature was significantly different and far more calculating.[14] Though she was initially cold and held a cruel view towards members of the MSF, her time spent with them would cause her to develop an attachment towards the group. Being raised by Cipher as an orphan at an early age, Paz admitted that she had never experienced as much enjoyment and peaceful times as she had during her time in MSF. In addition, Zero had led her to believe that she was the ninth person to hold the name "Paz", although this was later revealed to be false. The longer she stayed at MSF's Mother Base, the more her commitment to Cipher's plans wavered. In her tapes, she compared the relaxing, peaceful times she had spent on Mother Base to her intensive training in her earlier life. Her wavering commitment and loyalty to Cipher was such that she tried to delay the plan to hijack ZEKE so that she could enjoy "Peace Day." She also demonstrated herself to be unwilling to kill Chico after he had discovered her sabotaging ZEKE. Furthermore, Paz's concern for Chico's wellbeing during their imprisonment at Camp Omega was one of the rare times in which she wanted to help anyone other than Cipher.

Despite expressing an initial dislike towards Big Boss, Paz expressed an understanding towards his beliefs in one of her tapes; in which she shared his view in regards to war and humanity's desire for conflict. This caused her to relate to Big Boss on a personal level, leading her to develop an attachment towards him and his outlook/goals for MSF's future. In this regard, while projecting her inevitable battle against Big Boss and the possibility that she might die, she expressed feelings of contentment saying that she wouldn't mind dying at the hands of a person like Big Boss. This developed attachment would extend during her interrogation under Skull Face, as Paz willingly chose to side with Big Boss over her former employer Zero; in which she revealed information about Zero, under the belief that it would save Big Boss.

In her final moments, Paz willingly allowed herself to die in an explosion caused by a second bomb hidden inside her; in which she jumped out of the helicopter in order to protect Big Boss, Chico, and the remaining MSF members who were inside the helicopter.

Paz's decision to initiate ZEKE's hijacking stemmed from fear of Cipher subjecting her to a "fate worse than death" should she either fail or otherwise disobey her mission directives, as well as despair that her attempt at delaying her mission was exposed to Cipher. Her attachment to the MSF would cause her to feel conflicted and break down emotionally before finally maintaining her composure as she activated ZEKE. During her hijacking of ZEKE, Paz ultimately revealed that she only viewed the concept of peace as nothing but a mere fantasy. She believed that deterrence as a philosophy had become obsolete and that absolute control of warfare and information is the ultimate approach to achieving an illusion of "peace." Enacting Cipher's goal, she believed that the intelligence community would slowly be united within a world that is governed by electronics and through complete control of information. She was under the belief that Cipher would ultimately watch over the world, guiding the will of the people and society, all while remaining undercover as the world remained blissfully unaware of Cipher's influence; essentially ruling the whole world under a single will.

As part of her mission, she had offered Big Boss to join Cipher in order to act as a messianic figure that would protect Cipher and its operations; acting as Cipher's deterrent. Even as an agent of Cipher as well as sharing Big Boss's view regarding conflict, she didn't seem to view The Boss in a heroic manner as much as Zero and Big Boss did. After Big Boss's refusal to comply with Cipher's offer, Paz decided to carry out Cipher's plan to defame Big Boss and the rest of MSF as dangerous outlaws that would threaten the whole world through the launch of ZEKE's nuke. Paz was directly ordered by Zero to carry out such an alternative outcome in her mission, although she said in her diary that she felt it was extreme.[15]

Paz had an affinity for machines as she revealed to Big Boss during her hi-jacking of ZEKE. In addition, she was skilled at engineering and mechanic-related things, having single-handedly modified ZEKE to be pilotable and even going as far as to lock out the Mother Base control computer to prevent the Mother Base staff from shutting it down, although she kept it secret from the Mother Base staff until she hi-jacked ZEKE.[16] She was trained in deep-sea scuba diving, presumably so she'd escape from Mother Base upon succeeding her mission. It was largely because of this that she ended up surviving her battle with Big Boss, something that Big Boss also suspected. She also may have been proficient with firearms and some form of combat training, as Chico described her as being "armed" when he accidentally stumbled upon her attempt at sabotaging ZEKE as well as when she compared herself to Strangelove whom she viewed as an "out-of-shape" woman that posed no threat to her.

Similar to her compatriots and Strangelove, Paz, or rather, Pacifica, was a tobacco user, although she primarily used snuff tobacco during her mission, something she implied that she was disgusted with.[17] She used the variety of snuff where she puts a pouch of tobacco leaf directly inside her lip for it to absorb, and it was because of this that her Paz identity often had a quirk where she placed her index finger on her upper lip, which was actually a means to keep her snuff in position and prevent it from falling out as she wasn't used to it, something that Snake and Miller recalled shortly after her defeat.[18] In a communication with Zero, Paz inquired as to whether she was actually speaking to him, implying that, even with her unique status of having met Zero face-to-face, she occasionally received orders from proxies like other agents.[19]

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker[]

Paz Introduction

Paz's title card in Peace Walker.

Paz's English voice actress (Tara Strong) also voiced Elisa and Ursula in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Coincidentally, Zadornov (Paz's partner) is voiced by Steven Blum, who also voiced Elisa and Ursula's accomplice in Portable Ops, and both characters end up fighting Big Boss while inside a Metal Gear. During TGS 2009, Hideo Kojima stated that Paz was the game's heroine,[20] although it was later revealed that Paz was actually the secret antagonist of the game. Although herself a new character, her overall design had some similarities to a concept sketch for Sunny in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Paz's character song, "Koi no Yokushiryoku," is included on the "Heavens Divide" single. Kojima Productions broadcast it on air in Hideochannel Radio on February 18, 2010. The song also had a promotional video released around this time, depicting Paz and some MSF members proceeding to sing the song in a similar manner to a musical.

Mgspw-paz-ortega-andrade

Yoji Shinkawa's design of Paz Ortega Andrade.

According to conceptual storyboards included in the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Official Art Works book, Paz and Zadornov were intended to be directly involved in Peace Walker's development, and they were to talk in a room while Big Boss was listening in from an adjoining window, mirroring how Solid Snake eavesdrops on Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot in the climax of Metal Gear Solid, before Big Boss ends up being caught and surrounded by Hot Coldman and his Peace Sentinel soldiers. In addition, Paz was also intended to shoot Zadornov in the head before proceeding to hijack ZEKE. Likewise, various character concept designs for Paz revealed that she had various designs that were ultimately not included in the game, including a gray version of her dress with a badge-like emblem and a green mini-tie that is presumably her high school uniform, as well as her underwear model with her wearing a H-Chest Harness on her person, either implying that she was originally considered to be fought in-person in addition to fighting her while she was piloting ZEKE, or a reference to Chico's claim about her being armed when stating he couldn't stop her in one of the briefing tapes. The design used in the game was also not her final design, with two other elected designs being her with longer dress, shorter boots, a combat harness, and gloves, and a radically different design depicting her with short hair, similar in hair-style to Para-Medic, and long pants with suspenders. Also, one of the concept arts also implied that, in addition to being accompanied by Zadornov, Paz would have also been accompanied by a bespectacled woman wearing pants with suspenders when requesting that Snake participate in their mission in Costa Rica. When conducting the Mock ZEKE battle, there is a radio call from Paz, despite it taking place after the battle where she was believed to have been killed.

Paz's real name, Pacifica Ocean, can be seen marked on her boots, in her full polygon model produced for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Paz's overall design in Peace Walker, and to a lesser extent The Phantom Pain, resembles the character artwork for Maria Renard from Castlevania: Dracula X (which was also made by Konami).

During the Zeke Mock Battle, Paz can supply a radio conversation when using the function during the battle. As the battle explicitly takes place after Paz's revolt, it foreshadows Paz's survival.

During the Custom AI Battles, Paz's voice was utilized instead of their standard voices, with them supplying far more threatening language rather than merely stating the attack.

Mother Base Staff[]

"My name is Paz, and I'll do anything to protect my namesake."

Paz is a unique staff member at Mother Base, available after completing Chapter 4. She asks Snake to let her help at Mother Base as she has nowhere else to go.

Even after Big Boss defeats her in the fight against ZEKE, for gameplay purposes, Paz remains as a soldier in MSF and her credentials/bio can still be viewed under the personnel section of the Mother Base menu. The "Date with Paz" mission as well as the ZEKE boss fight mission also remains playable.

"A young Costa Rican girl who cherishes peace. She is studying the nation's Peace Constitution under the guidance of Professor Gálvez at the yet-to-be-sanctioned United Nations University of Peace. She was held captive by the mysterious armed force initiating military deployment in various parts of Costa Rica. She, alongside Gálvez, entreats MSF to eliminate the armed force and restore peace to the nation. Her name, Paz, means peace in Spanish."
―Paz's bio description on Mother Base's model viewer in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Paz's Diary[]

The AI Weapons in Extra Ops have Paz's Diary tapes in their pods, much like how they had Strangelove's Memories tapes in Main Ops. The only difference in finding them is that they're in a different spot than in Main Ops. Pupa type II: between B & C, Pupa Custom: between C & D, Chrysalis type II: between C & D, Chrysalis Custom: between D & A, Cocoon type II: between D & A, Cocoon Custom: between A & B, Peace Walker type II: between A & B, Peace Walker Custom: between B & C. These tapes can't be viewed until you complete the ZEKE battle in Main Ops. It is also to be noted that these tapes are the only ones where one of the characters actually reacts to their presence inside the AI pod (Kazuhira Miller, when a tape is retrieved from the AI pod, will say "Hm? What's a tape doing in there?"). The tapes cover her stay at Mother Base from her point of view, as well as elaborate a bit on her and Cipher's plans as well as her motivations for attempting to hijack ZEKE. Listening to all of the tapes in Paz's Diary also results in another briefing tape with Chico being unlocked, regarding Paz's questionable survival and deducing the reason why Paz delayed trying to attack Big Boss despite being loyal to Cipher. All of the diary tapes were later implemented into the cassette tapes throughout the sequel Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

Date Paz[]

After the events of Chapter 4, an Extra Ops mission (67th overall) called "Date with Paz" is unlocked. Due to the humorous nature of the mission, Paz supposedly being only sixteen, along with Paz declaring twice in her diary that "she has no interest in that man,"[21] not all aspects are likely to be canon.

1510160520457

Paz, in Extra Ops 067 "Date with Paz."

In the mission, Snake is the only playable character. The context of the mission requires that the player use the CO-OPs COMM to "talk" to her. Depending on the phrases spoken and their appropriateness, her affinity will either be bolstered (shown by a speech bubble with a red heart), will be skeptical at the remark (look confused), or her affinity will be lowered (depicted with a blue heart with a tear on it). Also, overuse of the phrases will eventually lead to the affinity being lowered. To end the mission, use a Love Box, or any Cardboard box, and equip it. Paz will then ask "room for one more?" and enter, with it shaking and Paz commenting in a various way depending on the mission results (if affinity was high, Paz will be giggling. If the box was immediately used at the start of the mission, Paz will humorously say "Over already?". If affinity was maxed, she will state with "I feel a little awkward."). In addition, the ending rank will depend on the current height of the affinity meter. Furthermore, Paz will react by moving around, causing her skirt to sway, if the player uses the camera on her. Using the CO-OPs COMM "Follow Me!" will allow Paz to follow Snake as he runs across the beach and on rare occasions, Paz may trip and fall as she runs (does not affect affinity meter). Playing "Koi no Yokushiryoku" on the Walkman will also have Paz dance. Paz will react if the player places a magazine near her. A certain CO-OPs COMM Battle Cry effect ("Time to say 'Good Night!!!'") will also have Paz fall asleep. Doing this will also allow the player the opportunity to search her to find a design spec relating to the Psyche Recovery variation of the EZ Gun. The player can lie down face first between Paz's legs, with Paz telling Snake that "[his] beard hurts."[22] In addition, if the player uses the Codec while doing this, the rest of the main characters will call Snake expressing disgust at his actions and demanding to know what he's doing.[23] She also at times sleep talks, commenting on Snake as well as Gallo Pinto, as well as making comments that hint at her taking orders from someone in a different tone of voice.[24] When the affinity meter is filled, Paz will start jumping up and down. S-ranking the mission will land the player with Amanda's outfit as a usable uniform, and in addition, will result in Paz wearing only her underwear in subsequent replays of the mission.

976667754

Paz in her underwear.

If the player uses either the Naked Camo or the Swim Trunks for the Date with Paz mission, Paz will run away (and in the case of the Naked Camo, make a remark before doing so). Using CQC is not advised, as it will then turn into a grope, causing Paz to slap Snake in the face and cause her affinity to go down (although if the player grabs her from behind while she is in her underwear in replays of the mission after achieving an S-rank, they can perform CQC and also interrogate her). If interrogated, she claims that she has nothing to hide, insisting that Snake believe her, reiterate her identity as Paz, claim Snake is hurting her and release her, before eventually admitting she stole rations from Mother Base before begging Snake to release her. In addition, attacking Paz even once ends with an automatic mission failure (which is depicted with Paz calling Snake a "creep" shortly before storming away, and Snake, during the game over sequence, attempting to apologize to Paz in the Game Over style). Causing her affinity to deplete completely also results in a mission failure. S-Ranking the mission while Paz is in her underwear unlocks Paz's underwear model in Model Viewer.

If one looks closely at the top of her bra, the frills are made up of Peace logos.

Paz appeared in the Android/iOS card game Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, where she acted as several cards.

Metal Gear Solid V[]

Paz returns in Metal Gear Solid V. Her English voice actress, Tara Strong, performed facial motion capture for the character, while additional motion capture was performed by Savannah Daniels.

Prior to the release of Metal Gear Solid V, Konami Europe released a blog featuring a timeline that listed Paz’s birth year as 1950.[25] However, the games have remained vague regarding an exact date.[4]

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes[]

Paz's hinted at survival in Peace Walker was later confirmed in the PAX Prime 2012 trailer and demo for Ground Zeroes (then titled Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes), where she alongside Chico are detained at Camp Omega, with Big Boss infiltrating the facility himself to rescue them. She later appeared in the Red Band trailer for E3 2013, although she was not identified as her directly, only being identified in one of the KP alerts, which also confirmed that the device Big Boss and Chico were removing from her was a bomb.

Paz's introductory scene in Ground Zeroes.

The scene concerning the emergency surgery on Paz was censored in the Japanese version of Ground Zeroes, with Hideo Kojima being unhappy with this decision, as it was intended to mirror a certain scene from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.[26] Paz's death was originally intended to be different: that Skull Face had in fact killed her prior to Big Boss arriving, and Chico witnessed the death. In addition, by the time the events of the game happened, Paz's body would have already undergone decomposition.[27] Although cut, Chico's statements when being carried to the heliport indicated that it was cut late into development.[28]

Paz's inmate number in Ground Zeroes was 471298. Skull Face sarcastically said that her favorite song was "Here's to You."

Paz is one of only four main characters from Peace Walker to not be included as an officer in the Mother Base development game on the Ground Zeroes companion app (the others being Chico, Zadornov, and Coldman).

Concept art for The Phantom Pain character Quiet bears a strong resemblance to Paz.

The implied torture and rape of Paz in the tapes was received with some controversy. Kojima, responding to the controversy, pointed out that although he anticipated the negative feedback, he didn't want to back away from these things and that games couldn't be considered part of culture if they couldn't show socially unacceptable aspects.[29]

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain[]

In The Phantom Pain launch trailer, there is a brief scene during the Peace Walker segment, where Paz is seen accompanying MSF soldiers at Bananal Fruta de Oro, as well as stretching her arms out, though this was never actually in Peace Walker itself. The scene was instead taken from the promotional video depicting Paz and some MSF soldiers singing Love Deterrence listed above.[30][31]

Cover-0

The cover of the book "Paz" was reading in The Phantom Pain.

Pages

The pages of the book containing what seems like gibberish.

An amnesiac Paz returns in The Phantom Pain proper, appearing alive and well despite the events of Ground Zeroes. She can be found in the medical bay, on the main platform of Mother Base, behind a blue door on the top floor. However, this Paz is later revealed to be a "phantom" that appears only to Venom Snake; the "hospital room" itself is still under construction. In the collector's edition of the official strategy guide, Hideo Kojima was ambiguous, stating "Paz's flashbacks are meant to make the player think. Are they hallucinations? Or are they a reality? Or are they a phantom pain?" After Venom Snake's encounter with the phantom, he encounters a butterfly that vanishes before his eyes after clutching it in his hand. Butterflies often symbolize death in Japanese culture, and its supernatural appearance is possibly symbolic of Venom Snake coming to terms with Paz's death.

If the player proceeds to visit Paz without having a new memento photo to show her, it will show various cutscenes:

  • Paz, when Snake arrives, is in the middle of reading her textbook, only to accidentally drop it after being startled by Snake's arrival. The player, when prompted, will then pick up the book and hand it back to her, with her thanking Snake and saying he was always kind to her, before asking if he'll be back.
  • Paz, will turn around and note Snake's presence.

Like in the Paz surgery scene from Ground Zeroes, the scene where Paz opens her wound and removes her bomb before upon the completion of her side story was censored in the Japanese version of The Phantom Pain.[32] Unlike Ground Zeroes, the PC version of The Phantom Pain also had this scene censored.

Paz's likeness also appears in the form of the idol model poster on Mother Base, with an anime-inspired design, and the ticker sign "My Idol of Peace, Paz! We love Paz!" It also had a signature similar to that of another Paz-related artwork, possibly by the actual artist.[33][34] She also appears on another poster, wearing only a blouse and surrounded by fox-like stuffed animals.

A cartoon silhouette of Paz also appears on one of the construction posters on Mother Base early in the game, where she is seen crying and holding up her right hand, where her index finger is comically depicted in an oversized cast with the caption "Safety First!" and "Precautions take seconds, injuries take lives!"

Other appearances[]

Paz appears in the non-canon game Metal Gear Survive in the opening flashback of the Ground Zeroes Incident.

Paz appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a spirit. When fighting her puppet fighter, her spirit possesses a Villager from Animal Crossing and is accompanied by a giant ROB, presumably referring to her hijacking of Metal Gear ZEKE late in Peace Walker. In addition, her condition is being equipped with Bob-Ombs, which either referenced her plan on framing MSF with a nuclear strike on the East Coast in Peace Walker, or her demise via Skull Face implanting her with two bombs in Ground Zeroes. Aside from this, her hijacking ZEKE and battling Big Boss in Peace Walker is presumably referenced in the fifth match Snake's classic mode "Weapons and Equipment OSP" where Snake has to fight two Samus Arans from Metroid and two R.O.B.s on Norfair, due to the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Main Theme being the BGM for the match.

Kazuhira Miller: Snake, I rigged that radio so you can contact our young lady friend Paz. // Snake (Big Boss): Is she OK? // Miller: No need to worry. She's tougher than you think... // Snake: Still just a kid. // Miller: Which is exactly why she could be an effective source of information. Besides, that little angel de la paz is the one who gave us this mission, right? // Snake: ...I guess. // Miller: I'll put her on. // Paz Ortega Andrade: Snake... // Snake: Paz. Where are you? // Paz: Ciudad Colón. A school. The teacher told me to stay here until things quiet down. // Snake: Teacher? Oh, him. He's... Yeah, that's probably good advice. // Paz: Si. He has a radio in his room, so we can talk anytime. // Snake: ...Pretty fancy for a teacher. // Paz: Promise me, Snake, that you'll bring back peace. And... // Snake: I know. I'll contact you if I find your friend. // Paz: Thank you. Snake, if you need to know about Costa Rica - the geography, the climate, the wildlife, anything - just ask me. I know about its history and laws, too. We learned it all in school. // Snake: Got it. I have a question, I'll ask. // Paz: ...I, uh... // Snake: What? // Paz: In school I also learned that peace is an unnatural state for human society. And that war is a constant threat to our relationship with others. // Snake: That's right. // Paz: So, to achieve peace, we have to create it ourselves. Crying about it won't bring it about, or make it last. Each one of us must go and seek it out. // Snake: You won't find it without making sacrifices. No offense, but I don't know what peace is. Never felt what it's like. Never even been interested in it. Paz: Snake...? // Snake: Ah, sorry. Listen Paz, I think your ideas are... admirable, and I hope they turn out to be right. // Paz: Yeah, me too. // Snake: Peace is in your name. Who better to help bring it back? // Paz: Thanks, Snake. I will be here whenever you need me. See you later. Miller: Snake, use your radio to call people. But stay alert. You're in the middle of a mission, and you can't afford to let your guard down. // Snake: Got it. // Miller: Need to know more about Costa Rica? Paz can help you out. Snake: Good to know. // Miller: We'll follow their transport route. That should take us straight to their main base. // Snake: From what I've seen, it looks like nukes. // Miller: Agreed. The key thing now is to confirm whether those "spears" really are what we think they are, and if so, why they're here. Snake: Follow the transport route, find the nukes. // Miller: That's what I'm thinking. First we should make contact with the Sandinista comandante. They can tell us more about what's up ahead. But it looks like their hideout's already come under attack. // Snake: We'd better hope they're still alive. Miller: Snake, infiltrate that cabin and secure the Sandinistas' comandante. Neutralize any guards by knocking them out, putting them to sleep, or even using the Fulton recovery system. You choose how to handle it, Boss.

She got a scholarship thanks to Zadornov, and was living at the dorms... But he was KGB. All signs are her scholarship came from the KGB, too. Even if they let him go, she's not going to be seeing any more money. // Snake: It wouldn't have been much anyway. // Miller: So I was wandering, what about letting her stay here a while? // Snake: What does she think? // Miller: She says she wants to help out. It would only be temporary. She's still in shock. Right now, no one understands her better than we do. // Snake: OK. But Kaz, don't take your eyes off her. // Miller: What do you mean? // Snake: It won't be easy getting used to this kind of life. // Miller: I know, Snake. I'm not trying to turn her into one of us. You should talk to her yourself later. // Snake: OK.

You just went through a hell of a time. You should probably take it easy until you're settled. // Paz: Thank you. But there must be something I can do. You would not want me near a gun, but I am a decent cook. // Snake: Now there's a skill we can use. // Paz: Put me on the mess hall team - I think I can handle it. Once I get used to it, I'll even add in some Costa Rican recipes. // Snake: Sounds like a plan.

(Kaz turns angrily to the comatose Paz) You spying bitch...! (angrily runs to her seat/bed, shoving the Medic out of the way to lift her up) C'mon, start talking, bitch! C'mon, get up and start talking!!" // (Paz then wakes up and spits up blood, which hits Miller. She gets up in a panic and goes to the chopper's door.) // Chico: Paz... // Miller: (clearly angry at her) You little... Paz: [...] I cannot imagine he'll [Big Boss] be willing to negotiate. It seems I am to fight the legendary Big Boss. I don't know if I'll be able to beat him, but if I have to choose between death and defying Cipher, I will gladly choose death. The thought of dying does not scare me. But if I disobey my orders, the fear and despair awaiting me will be far worse than anything I can imagine. It was Cipher who took me in as an orphan - gave me food and a place to live. Never figured her for a snuff user. // Miller: I can't believe we never noticed. // Big Boss: She used the kind where you keep a pouch of leaf in your upper jaw and let it absorb through your gums. She might not have been used to it. Probably used her finger to keep it in place.

Paz: It was harmless enough until, to my irritation, she began pestering me whether there was anybody I "liked." "Not right now," I said, trying to dodge the question. But she pressed on. "It's Snake, isn't it?" I gritted my teeth and played it coy: "Maybe." Cécile nodded and giggled, "He's pretty sexy, isn't he?" What a ditz. It's all I can manage to just survive.
