A microfilm is a type of film used to print pictures and other information in a tiny form in order to carry it discreetly. It is often used in spy related objectives.

Usage[]

Philosophers' Legacy[]

During the 1940s, the funds and bank transactions made during the Philosophers' pact to end World War II, known as the Philosophers' Legacy, was stored on a microfilm by Boris Volgin, the Philosophers' main accountant, as a means to ensure that the Soviet Union got the vast sum of money. By the 1960s, Boris' son, GRU colonel Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin, obtained the microfilm containing the Philosophers' Legacy, which the governments of China and America attempted to steal for themselves. Eventually, in September 1964, the microfilm made its way to America, with the Chinese gaining a fake microfilm from their agent.

Army's Heaven[]

Warning: The following information is from outside Hideo Kojima's core "Metal Gear Saga." Its canonicity within the continuity is disputed, therefore reader discretion is advised.[?]

The rogue FOX commander Gene stored data on the secret funds, equipment, and personnel that he had amassed for Army's Heaven onto a microfilm, which he later gave to Naked Snake on his deathbed.

Non-"Metal Gear Saga" information ends here.

OILIX[]

By late 1999, the Czech biologist, Dr. Kio Marv, stored his OILIX data on a microfilm, which he then proceeded to hide within a Konami MSX game cartridge. He placed the cartridge inside a secure locker within his confinement room in Zanzibar Land, which Solid Snake later managed to recover.

Behind the scenes[]

Microfilms also appeared in the original version of Metal Gear Online, included in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, where they acted as the flag in a game similar to "capture the flag."
