Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 is a video game compilation of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (the latter two versions specifically being from the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection). It was announced at the PlayStation Showcase 2023 on May 24, following Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater's reveal, with further information announced during the June 21, 2023 Nintendo Direct. Copyrighted content (archival footage, etc) is edited, presumably due to licensing issues.[1] It was released on October 24, 2023 for the PlayStation 4,[2] PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Nintendo Switch (along with a free PlayStation 5 upgrade to those who purchased the digital version on PlayStation 4.) It was later revealed that a physical version will be released on PlayStation 4 exclusively to EMEA regions on March 7, 2024.

Each game includes a Screenplay Book and "Master Book" containing a series chronology, character and story information, and other game information. A "Bonus Contents" package is available when purchasing the complete collection that includes the NES version of Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge, the Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel and Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel videos, and a digital soundtrack with tracks from across the included games.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 was an exhibit at the 2023 Tokyo Game Show. One of the exhibits was a display showing a detailed timeline for everything in the Metal Gear series. Aside from it including Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops as well as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, it also added events from the 2020s, an era that Metal Gear games had not covered yet. The first 100 people who played the collection at the exhibit received one of two Metal Gear Exclamation Point T-shirts.

Starting on October 6, a special countdown series occurred on the official Japanese Twitter account, with each day starting on 7PM adding an image derived from Yoji Shinkawa artwork as well as listing how many days remained until the game's launch. In addition, both the Japanese and English Twitter accounts had images of various characters from the three Metal Gear Solid games as well as character introduction descriptions of them.

On October 20, 2023, an AMV made by the VTuber Mori Calliope was released with the song "Sneaking".

Brand new orchestrated versions of the main theme songs for the three Solid games ("The Best is Yet to Come", "Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday", and "Snake Eater") are included as downloadable content with digital pre-orders and physical Day One Edition copies worldwide.[3][4]

Preordering physical versions of the collection are also bundled with preorder bonuses. In Japan, preorder bonuses vary depending on provider. Those who preordered received either a set of 3 acrylic stands featuring Solid Snake and Naked Snake, a set of 3 post cards (Konamistyle), PC or smart phone wallpapers (Amazon), a pass card (AmiAmi), a display stand (Ebten), a set of 3 button badges (Otakara Souko), a sheet of logo stickers (Geo), a acrylic board (Book Off), or a acrylic stand featuring the 3 games’ box arts (WonderGoo.) The first 200 people to buy the collection on launch day at Shibuya Tsutaya received one of two Metal Gear Exclamation Point T-shirts.[5] Other Asian regions received the set of 3 acrylic stands and Europe, Australia and UK regions received one of three pin badges (at random) of Metal Gear REX, Metal Gear RAY, or the Shagohod. The pin badges in particular were later reissued as prizes for two competitions hosted by Konami UK. First being the Instagram Codec filter competition and again as the first day of the Konami Xmas 2023 event competitions. The competitions were strictly for the UK region.[6]

Games included[]

Metal Gear Solid (including Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2), Metal Gear Solid 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3 are available as separate purchases, with the NES titles only available as part of the complete Volume 1 package. Regional variants are available as free downloadable content from within each launcher.

Videos included[]

Only available as part of the complete Volume 1 package. Both the Japanese and English versions are included, downloadable separately from within the Bonus Content Vol. 1 launcher.

Changes in the Master Collection[]

  • The medical items have had their logos changed to a green with a white cross. Originally, it was white with a red cross. The change was presumably done to avoid complaints being made by the Red Cross organization.
  • The German version of Metal Gear Solid had blood removed from various scenes, most notably Gray Fox's slaughter in the hallway outside Hal Emmerich's lab and Meryl being shot.

Behind the scenes[]

  • This collection marks the first time Snake's Revenge has been re-released, and the second time the NES version of Metal Gear has been reissued, following the Metal Gear Special Disc included with the Japanese Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Premium Package. These are the only re-releases of any non-canon Metal Gear games in a compilation to date.
