Mao Zedong, also transliterated as Mao Tse-tung and commonly referred to as Chairman Mao (December 26, 1893 – September 9, 1976), was a Chinese Communist revolutionary and the founder of the People's Republic of China. He served as the chairman from June 19, 1945 to his death in September 9, 1976. He was also the author of several books, including Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung and On Protracted War.
In 1974, Kazuhira Miller mentioned Zedong's book On Protracted War to Big Boss as an example of a work articulating the concept of guerilla warfare.

Flames spewed from one of the houses. Likely, this village had been a rebel hideout. By blurring the line between the battlefield and civilian life, guerrillas could evade the attacks of conventional armies. The guerrilla warfare tactics employed in the mountains of South America owed much to Mao Zedong. A mountainous expanse covered much of China's territory, and in farming villages in those highlands, Mao had made his stronghold. He knew that urbanized forces would not be suited to the steep ranges. South America, with a similar share of mountains and villages, had a lot in common with China.
