Ivan Ivanovitch Ivanov was a Soviet soldier stationed in Afghanistan during the Phantom Pain Incident in 1984. He left with the refill platoon and left behind a book, Nineteen Eighty-Four. He was apparently fluent in English as the book was in English and none of his Russian comrades were able to read it. Ivan was also noted to be a science-fiction fan.
Behind the scenes[]
Ivan is a character mentioned via enemy chatter in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a reference to Nineteen Eighty-Four, a book that heavily influenced the theme in The Phantom Pain. This was one of many references throughout the game, including the fact that the game takes place in the same year, 1984.
As Ivan is the Russian equivalent of the name "John", and from his middle name we can infer that his father's name was also Ivan, this could be a reference to the Johnny family, as like Ivanov, the Johnny family names each first-born son Johnny.
