Milita BMP-3

A BMP-3 IFV being used by the Middle Eastern Militia.

An infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is a type of armored fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide fire support. Although they possess superficial similarities to armored personnel carriers (APCs), they are different in that IFVs are designed specificially to provide fire support, while APCs only transport infantry into battle.

AMX-VCI Infantry Fighting Vehicle[]

The AMX-VCI (French: Véhicule de Combat d'Infanterie) is a French Infantry Fighting Vehicle that acted as the frontline vehicle for France until being replaced by the AMX-10P. It was a variant of the AMX-13 light tank.

Sigint briefly referenced the AMX-VCI and its ICV role when discussing with Snake about the Soviets developing a next-generation flying infantry combat vehicle after Snake witnessed it briefly during Operation Snake Eater, and to a lesser extent the Virtuous Mission's conclusion.

BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle[]

The BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle was an amphibious infantry fighting vehicle developed by the Soviet Union. It was the successor of the BMP-1 and the BMP-2. The name stood for Boevaya Mashina Pehoty (Боевая Машина Пехоты, literally "Infantry Combat Vehicle"). Its development could be traced back to the development of the Obyekt 688 light tank prototype, hence why it was sometimes referred to as the Obyekt 688M.

One BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle was used by the Middle Eastern Milita during Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection. Its arrival was more than enough to have the British PMC Praying Mantis call a tactical retreat and use smoke grenades to evade them, as they were vastly outgunned.

Behind the scenes[]

The BMP-3 appears in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and can by used by the player to provide cover from PMC fire. The player can choose to defend the IFV from Javelin-equipped PMCs, prolonging its survival, though it is ultimately destroyed when it reaches the end of the street in Crescent Meridian.

The BMP-3 reappears as a card for the phone app Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, although it is erroneously referred to as a tank.
