A Forward Operating Base (FOB) is any secured forward military position, commonly a military base, that is used to support tactical operations. They may or may not contain an airfield, hospital, or other facilities, and are generally separate from a main operating base by being temporary stations rather than permanent.

Usage

Militaires Sans Frontières

The Militaires Sans Frontières made use of various camps due to their nomadic nature, although they eventually gained a forward operating base in the form of Mother Base, which was originally a OTEC offshore research plant situated in the Caribbean before it was purchased by a front company by the KGB agent Vladimir Zadornov, who supplied the base to them as down-payment for hiring their services in Costa Rica. They eventually expanded it and even completely renovated it to create a hexagon-based design with multiple connected struts. However, it was destroyed several months later by XOF and Skull Face.

Diamond Dogs

The main headquarters for the Diamond Dogs, also called Mother Base, was situated in the Seychelles, which like Mother Base before it was also an offshore plant-based facility. This eventually received extensive expansions, eventually becoming large enough to feature its own forward operating bases, purchasing them in territorial waters located in areas including that east of the Hawaiian Islands, the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the South Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the North Pacific Ocean, the South Pacific Ocean, and the North Atlantic Ocean.[1][2] These FOBs, like Mother Base, were also situated on offshore-plants, with their main purpose being to accelerate and hasten various developments and deployments for the military group, as well as allowing more recruits to join the PF. The need to develop an FOB and for a Security Unit was considered extremely important after a raid on the main Mother Base occurred in the form of a disgruntled former MSF member. Diamond Dogs' FOBs were often frequently attacked by rival PMCs, often stealing various equipment and personnel during the raids.

1980s PFs

Aside from Diamond Dogs, several other PFs active during the 1980s had Forward Operating Bases, which, similar to Diamond Dogs, were offshore plants. In many cases, they were modeled directly after Diamond Dogs' Mother Base and to a certain extent the MSF's Mother Base. The reasons varied, either as revenge against MSF's leader, Big Boss, for supposedly selling out the group (as was the case with Mosquito Stinger Force, the group Mosquito led), or because Diamond Dogs by that point had become so famous that several PFs participating in the War Economy proceeded to model themselves after them to honor them (as was the case with both Kill Count and No Alert).

FOB in gameplay

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, players can build their own FOBs and invade FOBs belonging to other players. Currently, only four FOBs can actually be built by the player, although plans are made to add more FOBs into the online FOB mode in the future, with the Piggyback Guide implying that there are as many as four FOBs to be developed in total. Players select which platform to invade, and then choose one of three landing zones to disembark to. If the attacking player is never seen by their rival's forces, the latter will not gain the opportunity to take revenge through the invader's wormhole.

Each time an infiltration is successful, ten soldiers will be abducted. These soldiers take a total of roughly four days to successfully recruit. During that time, if player one successfully infiltrates player two, and player two infiltrates player one within that four-day period, they will take back all their abducted staff along with ten of player one's staff. Any FOB platform will only yield soldiers who excel in that skill. For example, intel platform will yield ten soldiers who excel at intel. If a command platform is infiltrated, ten soldiers who excel at random skills will be abducted.

Infiltrating an FOB without being spotted will eliminate the possibility of the abducted staff being taken back with the only recruitment issue being the four-day period to recruit them. The defending player can fight the invader personally or leave the defense up to his soldiers on the base, as well as set whether the security force will use lethal or not lethal damage when defending. Further security options include the placement of decoys, mines, cameras, anti-theft alarms, infrared sensors and the deployment of UAV camera drones. A tweet by Konami admitted that they don't have any announced plans to develop a fifth FOB at the present,[3] with their Japanese version of the tweet making clear they can't rule out the possibility of a fifth FOB without the risk of driving players away because developments for weapons and security devices in later updates require staff to be at levels that require almost everyone in that team to have S++ skill. As such, meeting the requirements for these developments is extremely difficult without a fifth FOB.

Players can also create nuclear warheads that are stored on the Command Platform of an FOB. The nukes act as a deterrent, so that invaded players cannot get revenge on nuclear-equipped invaders unless they themselves have a nuke. Much like other resources and personnel on the FOBs, an invading player can steal nukes from other players and either keep them as a deterrent or dismantle them for heroism points and GMP. Nuclear deterrents can be circumvented if the invading player has achieved Hero status by accumulating over 15,000 heroism points.

The equipment of FOB guards can be determined by the player, though it is limited to class and grade of weapon and armor. Up until Grade 3 (or until the Sneaking Suit, Battle Suit, and UN-ARC NL are developed), all FOB guards will wear Tiger Stripe fatigues without headgear (though support units will wear balaclavas). After this, guards will start wearing Battle Suits if set to lethal, or Sneaking Suits if set to non-lethal. Starting with Grade 5 Battle Suits, FOB guards will start wearing HP-headgear. 

Players can also fulton knocked out guards if they choose to do so. If a player has only S+ combat soldiers, this is the fastest way to recruit S+ soldiers in addition to the ten soldiers on the platform and the resources rewarded with a successful infiltration.

FOB waters locations

Although the Piggyback Guide claims there are four FOBs able to be developed, only two could actually be developed at the game's initial launch. The third FOB was released via the Version 1.06 update,[4] while the fourth FOB was released in the December update.

In the pre-Event Points releases for the FOB Event Missions "Mosquito's Legacy", "New World Order", and "Bound Dragons", the locations of the FOBs were listed as being at the "Central Indian Ridge."

Although the Piggyback Guide claims there are four FOBs able to be developed, only two could actually be developed during the game's initial launch. The third FOB was released via the Version 1.06 update,[4] and the fourth FOB was released via the Version 1.07 update.[5] In addition, the actual game prices for the 3rd and 4th FOBs are different from that of the guide.

FOB Events in The Phantom Pain

Special promotional events are held periodically in the FOB feature of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Players who complete certain objectives during events are able to get rewards.

FOB Events are run periodically in order to grant players extra soldiers and resources based on criteria such as Successful Infiltration, adding Supporters to FOB Relationship, Base Expansion, and using MB Coins to speed up Base Expansion. Generally the rewards are a large number of processed materials, and A+ Rank and above Mother Base Staff based on which platform is infiltrated.

As well as these, there are specific named FOB Events which provide a brief introduction and feature a loose story around the infiltration of the FOB. These also have no risk of a reprisal, which means the player can steal staff and materials to their hearts content.

Originally, there were 4 weapons, 12 uniforms, 30 weapons colors, 6 base colors, 30 emblems (with only 20 of them being unveiled in the dataset before the May 10 update, as the remaining ten were hidden by placeholder images resembling black and red sparks), and 8 nameplate sets (with four nameplates per set), with all except for emblems and weapons having all their entries debuting at least once before the May 2016 update (with a little under half only being released for Emblems and the MOLOTOK-68 not debuting until after the latter update). After the May 2016 update, the list for each item category save for weapons and emblems were expanded to include new entries, with 31 new uniforms, 20 new weapons colors, 6 new base colors, and 5 new nameplate sets, plus full unveilment of the remaining 10 emblems. Aside from this, the uniforms render on the Event Point reward screen was given a slight variation compared to before the update.

Originally, when the Event FOBs came out, it required that the player beat Mission 31: Sahelanthropus before they could participate in the Event FOBs. After the May 10 update, it was changed to simply requiring that the player beat Mission 22: Retake the Platform to unlock the Event FOBs.

Although most of the Event FOBs (except for The Skulls Attack) have Ocelot telling the player at the beginning that successful infiltration of another PF's FOB will allow them to capture staff from the rival PF and expressing eagerness to induct the new recruits into Diamond Dogs, none of them actually allow the player to take staff (not counting volunteers or any of the security team members they had fultoned).

Mosquito's Legacy

This event runs between October 6, 2015 - October 20, 2015, and can be issued only after completing Mission 31. It was later re-issued between November 10, 2015 - maintenance time on November 17, 2015 in commemoration for the Version 1.06 release. It was later reissued between January 5, 2016 - maintenance time on January 12, 2016, this time with the inclusion of Event Points rewards as well as mission tasks. It was rereleased on March 8-14 of 2016, the latter being at 5 AM GMT (1 AM EST), although the receiving of rewards continued up to March 15, 2016. It was later released on April 5-19, with the MIRAZH-71 grenade launcher being released mid-event on April 12. There are no emblems released during the April 12 event.

This event runs between December 8-17, 2015 (the latter at the end of maintenance time at 3:00 PM GMT), and can be issued only after completing Mission 31. It was later reissued between January 12, 2016 - maintenance time on January 26, 2016, this time with the inclusion of Event Points rewards as well as mission tasks, and later on February 23, 2016 - maintenance time on March 8, 2016. The latter version was later re-released on April 19-26.

This event runs between December 17-29, 2015, and can be issued only after completing Mission 31. It is also the first FOB Event to issue event points and related rewards in addition to the standard and bonus rewards for completing a mission. As such, it is also the first FOB event to include mission tasks.

"Freedom from Oppression: Under the contract of the embattled and up-and-coming PF "NO ALERT," we are to mount an assault against "KILL COUNT," a PF whose hardline business politics have seen them chew through countless mercenaries and worsening the violence in conflict regions, all while filling their own pockets.

The Skulls Attack

This event was originally planned to be released on December 17, to commemorate the Version 1.07 update. However, it ended up delayed until December 29 for reasons unstated, instead being replaced with Freedom from Oppression above. Its event period will be from December 29 to January 5, the latter at maintenance time. There aren't any bonus points in this as Event Points mostly replaced this, although there ARE Event Point rankings and rewards issued via EP. An event commemorating the release of the Wormhole Generator during the January 12-26 rerelease of Bound Dragons indicated that the January 26 event was called "Skulls Attack", which was later confirmed to be a reissue of the same event from January 26 to February 9, the latter at maintenance time.[9] The Skulls Attack was re-released again for March 22-April 5.

Skulls Attack has several distinctions between the various Event FOBs, most likely because of the rather unique gameplay aspect to the mission:

  • It is the only one that has single platforms, and lacks a Combat, R&D, Support, and Intel platform.
  • It is the only one that does not require the player infiltrate a particular area of the first deck.
    • Owing to this, it is also the only one that does not reward the player with espionage points.
  • It is the only mission to have Miller give the opening line, instead of Ocelot (the line being, "Eliminate the target. How you do it is your call."). Ocelot himself only speaks when notifying the player that the Skulls have arrived by yelling "Here they come!"
    • It also has a different line from usual for the ending, where Miller yells "We fought them off!" instead of "Infiltration successful."
