The Nomad was a large transport aircraft used by Solid Snake, Otacon and Sunny, and crewed by two pilots. It housed several computers, as well as beds and other living necessities, serving as a flying HQ for the group.
History[]
In 2014, Solid Snake and Otacon, wanted by the U.S. government, worked, lived, and raised Sunny on board the Nomad. The aircraft was also home to three caged chickens, Solid, Liquid and Solidus, named after the subjects of Les Enfants Terribles. The food consumed onboard consisted of military rations and the chickens' eggs that Sunny would cook.
It was on board the Nomad where Otacon created his later inventions, such as Snake's OctoCamo suit, and the Metal Gear Mk. II and III. A weapons rack held various handguns and rifles, including the Operator, Mk. 2, a DSR-1, and an AK-102. The plane also carried a helicopter within the cargo hold, that Otacon piloted on missions.
Although an onboard non-smoking policy was in place, Snake frequently ignored it, often resulting in Sunny scolding him (one time even taking away his cigarette and disposing of it before he could smoke it).
In the aftermath of the Guns of the Patriots Incident, the Nomad landed on a runway in order to serve as a makeshift chapel for Meryl Silverburgh and Johnny Sasaki's wedding.

Behind the scenes[]
Based on the cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, the Nomad appears to be a cross between the American C-17 Globemaster III and Ukrainian Antonov AN-225 transport planes. It possesses a tail and drooping wings similar to the AN-225, whilst the overall body and four engine design are identical to the C-17.
The two unidentified pilots in the cockpit can be seen in the beginning of the Solid Sun mission briefing.
The Nomad, stationed on a runway
During mission briefings, the player is given the option to explore the Nomad using Metal Gear Mk. II or III. One can use this to find extra ammo, batteries, iPod songs and the digital camera. Bumping into certain characters will also give Snake different facial disguises if he is in possession of FaceCamo.
Other than the epilogue, the Nomad is never shown landing in the cutscenes, although it is implied to have done so in Act 2 and Act 3. The novelization by Project Itoh, however, does detail the landing in South America.
The serial code C-XXX-AT is listed on the body of the Nomad, with C-XXX on the tail.
