This article is about the "making of" documentary released for the PlayStation 2. You may be looking for The Making of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, a PAL-exclusive DVD documentary detailing the development of Metal Gear Solid 2.

The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 is an interactive "making of" documentary released for the PlayStation 2 on September 12, 2002 in Japan and September 24 of the same year in North America. It allows the player to view all of the polygonal models used for characters, mechanics and areas in the game and listen to the game's soundtrack.

The disc also features all of the real time cutscenes from the game with the audio removed and their respective storyboards, allowing the player to actively explore them and control them. Other features include special behind-the-scenes footage, all of the game's pre-release trailers, the completed script, Hideo Kojima's original game plan (available only in Japanese), the chronicle of Metal Gear Solid 2, and a gallery of Metal Gear Solid related products and merchandise (including concept models of Metal Gear Solid).

The disc also includes five "VR Training" levels that served as a precursor to Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.

Although it did not receive a standalone European release, the disc was packaged in the initial PAL release of the PlayStation 2 version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance for no extra charge, to compensate for both games' delayed releases (only the initial print run of the game included the disk, as indicated by a sticker on the cover). The cover of this edition could be reversed to reveal a Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 cover.

The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 was also included in the 20th Anniversary Edition re-release of the original Metal Gear Solid 2 in Japan, as well as in the complete 20th Anniversary Collection.
