Selva de la Muerte ("Jungle of Death") is a jungle in Central Heredia, Costa Rica. It contained some ruins from the Mayan civilization, and was presumably the home to sloths. It was located cliffside, with portions of it being at the bottom of the cliff and another portion being at the top.

In the early 1970s, the area was occupied by the CIA mercenary group Peace Sentinel, and was infiltrated by the Militaires Sans Frontières during the Peace Walker Incident.

Peace Walker Incident[]

Militaires Sans Frontières commander Naked Snake traveled through Selva de la Muerte while attempting to reach to the Peace Sentinel AI Lab, which was hidden inside an ancient Mayan pyramid. Evading scouts and ghillie-suited soldiers camouflaged among the vegetation, he eventually met missing French ornithologist Cécile Cosima Caminades, and had her transported to MSF's Mother Base. After locating the lost ID Card Cécile had used to escape Peace Sentinel, Snake returned to the area to gain access to the AI lab, with the MSF having destroyed part of the ruins to provide a shortcut back. The MSF later had to disarm Claymore mines in the hill area that had been planted by an unknown party.

Following Peace Sentinel's defeat by MSF, KGB agent Vladimir Zadornov hid in Selva de la Muerte during one of his multiple escapes from Mother Base. The MSF also commenced several further operations in the are, including a stealth operation, a sweep operation, and retrieving items from a near-dead MSF unit.
