Downtown was the central area of a Middle Eastern city, which became a battleground between a local militia and the Praying Mantis PMC in 2014.

Guns of the Patriots Incident[]

After a close call involving a local militiaman's discovery of a Rat Patrol member, Solid Snake passed through downtown in the midst of a firefight between the militia and Praying Mantis, in order to reach the Advent Palace. During the fighting, reinforcements arrived for Praying Mantis in the form of a Stryker. In addition, bombing raids from the PMC's X-80 Dragonfly-esque attack choppers also occurred near Advent Palace, and snipers were stationed in various parts of the area.
Behind the scenes[]
Downtown appears in Act 1, Liquid Sun, of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It was also featured as a playable map in Metal Gear Online, known as "Midtown Maelstrom" (not to be confused with the location within Eastern Europe in Act 3 called Midtown).
