Dr. William "Doc" Wilson is a character that was cut during the development of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
Character[]
The limited information given on Doc's character originates in Hideo Kojima's original game plan, which was later included with The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2. Concept artwork created by series artist Yoji Shinkawa was reprinted in The Art of Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, also included in The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2.
Doc, a brilliant mathematician, was to have been the scientist who developed Arsenal Gear’s AI. During his teens, he created an AI that defeated Deep Blue, the computer that famously beat the world chess champion of its time. While in his college years, he worked on the AI for soccer robots, winning successive championships at the World Robocup Tournament. During the Big Shell Incident, Doc was to provide radio support to Raiden, after the latter learns about Arsenal Gear from Emma Emmerich. He would also have offered various information about the marine wildlife and environment, similar to Master Miller's role in the previous game. Despite his supposed background, it would later be revealed that Doc was actually an AI construct, along with other members of Raiden's support team. This role would be passed over to the Colonel.
His character concept (including being a contact of Raiden as well as an AI-related expert) would later be reused for a similar purpose in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance with the character Dr. Wilhelm Voigt, who also had a doctorate-related nickname (in his case, Doktor).
