A Decoy, or Active Decoy, is a device designed to temporarily fool and distract enemy soldiers.
History[]
Peace Walker Incident[]
- Main article: Peace Walker Incident
During the Peace Walker Incident in 1974, the Militaires Sans Frontières procured design specs for the Decoy while attempting to escape the Aldea de los Despiertos from a clearing squad. They later developed it and made various improvements via MSF's R&D Team to increase its strength.

The Active Decoy was a support weapon developed by Diamond Dogs in 1984. It took the form of a mine that activated an inflatable replica of a humanoid which could fool and lure enemies over to them, allowing for a quick escape or an ambush. The Active Decoy could also be used as an offensive weapon by utilizing its rapid inflation speed to knock over an enemy by throwing it directly at or close to them.
Behind the scenes[]
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker[]
- "A life-sized, man-shaped decoy made of wood. It can be used to distract the enemy's attention, but the enemy will see through it immediately when they get close enough. Don't expect to rely on it too much - it is, after all, just a piece of wood."
- ―Decoy description in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
The decoy can be destroyed by any enemy soldier with a single kick after being deceived regardless of the rank or level of the decoy. They will utter phrases such as "We've been had!" after realizing their folly.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain[]
- "Active decoy.
After throwing, press the Ready Button (L2) and the Action Button (Triangle) to deploy a humanoid diversionary balloon that also plays voice clips through a built-in speaker." - ―Active Decoy description in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The Active Decoy appears in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as a Support Weapon. The humanoid figure resembles Venom Snake, and when upgraded, can lure the enemy by saying the phrases "Kept you waiting, huh?" or "You're pretty good," quotes which are used throughout the Metal Gear series. In order to use this decoy, it must be developed once the standard decoy is sufficiently upgraded. If an enemy sees a decoy, they will mistake it for Big Boss and will walk towards it. Once next to it, the enemy will realize it's simply a balloon and will pop it with a slash of their knife. A single slash from an enemy soldier will destroy the decoy, regardless of its rank. The only exception to the above is the E. Stun Decoy upgrade, due to the soldier being electrocuted at a high enough voltage to leave them stunned upon attempting to slash it. However, some soldiers will instead shoot the decoy, destroying it regardless of rank.
If the Decoy is used in combat, enemies will begin firing at it instead of the player if the decoy is visible. An upgraded decoy can survive multiple shots.
Metal Gear Survive[]
The Decoy appears in Metal Gear Survive as a humanoid figure that resembles Venom Snake.
