The Carl Gustav M2 Recoilless Rifle was a recoilless rifle developed in Sweden. It had a single shot variety, a multipurpose variety, and a Fulton variety.
Design[]
The M2 was developed in 1964 in Sweden. It employed the Krupp launching system, which vents air out from behind upon launching a shell to eliminate recoil, hence the name. It replaced the M1 Recoilless Rifle.
Peace Walker Incident[]

During the Peace Walker Incident in 1974, Big Boss managed to procure some design specs for the Carl Gustav M2 recoilless rifle single-shot variety after he demolished the Chrysalis AI weapon. It was eventually improved upon by the R&D Team of his mercenary group, the Militaires Sans Frontières. The MSF eventually procured design specs for the multi-purpose version of the Carl Gustav M2 after neutralizing an invading Peace Sentinel unit near the Fuerte La Ladera, and improved upon that after developing it. The MSF eventually managed to procure design specs for a Carl Gustav M2 variation that was capable of launching specialized rounds that contain Fulton Surface-to-air-recovery balloons after neutralizing a Peace Sentinel-owned customized MBTK-70 at El Cadalso, and eventually improved on that.
Post-Peace Walker[]
On April 3, 1982, during the Falklands War, a Royal Marines soldier ended up damaging an Argentinian corvette with this weapon. The M2 was used by Germany's Bundeswehr for illumination purposes.

In-game weapons description[]
- "A man-portable, recoilless rifle that fires potent 84mm shells. It employs the Krupp firing system, which vents the propellant gas out the rear of the gun to eliminate recoil.
The Carl Gustav M2 is distinguished by its high muzzle velocity, which gives its projectiles a lower, straigher trajectory and improves its accuracy compared to other rocket launchers.
On the downside, it is structured such that reloading can be a chore, making it unsuitable for repeat fire. Thus, the most effective way to use this weapon is to aim carefully and ensure the target is destroyed in one shot." - ―Carl Gustav M2 weapons description in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

This model has been modified to launch multipurpose HEAT rounds. The controlled fragments are distributed in an improved pattern, expanding on the area of effect but decreasing the damage dealt on each individual target. As a result, it is best used for wiping out large crowds of enemy infantry." - ―Carl Gustav M2 (Multi Purpose) description in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

This model has been modified to launch shells filled with sleeping gas as well as Fulton recovery balloons, allowing the user to perform Fulton recoveries from a relatively safe distance. Good for players who want to recruit new teammates but don't want to come out and face the enemy themselves." - ―Carl Gustav M2 (Fulton Recovery) description in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

- ^ The fact that the MSF procured the design specs from a Peace Sentinels-owned custom MBTK-70 indicated that this was originally developed by America.
