Brian McBride was the Director of Operations of CIA's African Desk (African Affairs Division). A member of Solid Snake's support team during the Galuade Incident in 2002, McBride provided his expertise on Gindran national affairs throughout the mission. In actuality, McBride was one of the five surviving members of Black Chamber, a defunct U.S. Army black ops unit, nearly wiped out by FOXHOUND two years prior.
Biography[]
Prior to 2000, the man who would become Brian McBride was a member of Black Chamber, a U.S. Army special forces unit created to take up missions that FOXHOUND was no longer able to due to increased surveillance by rival intelligence agencies, as a result of Solid Snake's success in taking down Outer Heaven in 1995. After a mission to stop South American terrorists from using a U.S.-made Metal Gear prototype that was hijacked, the unit was massacred by FOXHOUND. He, alongside four other members, were the only survivors. Unlike his comrades, who reformed the unit into an elite mercenary outfit, he created an entirely new identity for himself, that of Brian McBride.
He joined the CIA and quickly rose through the ranks to become the Director of Operations of the African Affairs Division. He would then use his position to leak classified intelligence to his former comrades regarding anything relating to their overall goal - taking revenge on the man who orchestrated the massacre of Black Chamber, known only as "Anonymous".
Galuade Incident[]
By 2002, McBride had learned about Metal Gear GANDER, the newest version of a Metal Gear tank developed in secret by the U.S. Army. Sensing an opportunity to finally find out the identity of "Anonymous", he shared his findings with Black Chamber, who proceeded to hijack GANDER en route to South America alongside the Gindra Liberation Front. Then, working under NSA's supervision, McBride planned the mission for Snake to infiltrate Galuade, the fortress formerly known as Outer Heaven, and eliminate the nuclear threat posed by Metal Gear Gander. Throughout the mission, however, he leaked information regarding Snake's progress to his comrades in order to impede him.
When Metal Gear GANDER was activated and launched what was initially believed to be a live nuke, he initially indicated that when/if Snake was to return to the United States, he would reprimand Snake for the failure.[1] During the mission, his cover was nearly blown when Pyro Bison revealed that a fifth Black Chamber survivor was among Snake's contact support team. He then gained the opportunity to cover his tracks temporarily when Dr. Harks revealed that Sgt. Chris Jenner was not with her Delta Squad team at the time of their ambush at the hands of Black Chamber, suggesting that she may have been the mole.
McBride eventually revealed his true colors when Black Arts Viper, the leader of Black Chamber, revealed the group's ultimate plans to Snake following Augustine Eguabon's death. McBride promptly took Col. Roy Campbell and Mei Ling hostage while Snake fought Viper, rooting for the latter to succeed in defeating Snake. McBride was eventually shot and killed by Weasel. He died without ever knowing that not only was his true identity known to Anonymous all along, but that he and the rest of his unit were actually manipulated by him via Gardner purposely leaking information about GANDER to him in the first place, setting the Galuade Incident in motion.
