An antenna (or aerial) is an electrical device which converts electric power into radio waves, and vice versa. It is usually used with a radio transmitter or radio receiver. In transmission, a radio transmitter supplies an oscillating radio frequency electric current to the antenna's terminals, and the antenna radiates the energy from the current as electromagnetic waves (radio waves). In reception, an antenna intercepts some of the power of an electromagnetic wave in order to produce a tiny voltage at its terminals, that is applied to a receiver to be amplified.

Usage[]

The radio operators within GRU had antennas near their right shoulderblade at the back, in order to ensure they transmitted radio signals if needed.

San Hieronymo Incident[]

Main article: San Hieronymo Incident

The communications base on the Soviet-owned San Hieronymo Peninsula had a dish antenna for outbound transmissions via satellites, and was the main identifying feature for the base. Snake found it via the dish when trying to search for it at Roy Campbell's behest upon escaping from the Prison 5 kilometers northwest and call for a rescue.[1][2]

Phantom Pain Incident[]

A parabolic antenna was present at Da Wialo Kallai's largest building, which Ocelot noticed alongside Venom Snake, and deduced by its presence that any intel files regarding the whereabouts of the then-recently detained Kazuhira Miller were most likely within the building.[3]

Outer Heaven Uprising[]

Main article: Outer Heaven Uprising

During the Outer Heaven Uprising in 1995, Solid Snake was forced to procure a specific antenna, in order to bypass radio jamming that had been set up in Building 2 of the enemy fortress. Shortly after acquiring it, Snake was contacted by his commanding officer, Big Boss, who had managed to get through to him.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

The Antenna is an item that can be procured in Metal Gear. Upon finding it, Big Boss will contact the player and mention a jamming field that was in place that had cleared up.[4]

It later reappeared with a similar role in the non-canon sequel to Metal Gear, Snake's Revenge, although it is instead found within the final area of the enemy base.

In the inner gatefold artwork for the Metal Gear Original MSX2 Video Game Soundtrack, a fixed communications antenna was seen in the background of the artwork.
