Authenticité campaign in Zaire (at the time known as the Republic of Congo-Léopoldville) ends in failure. The Ngumba Industrial Zone was shut down due to the incompetence of its new owners. [1]

Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov is exiled to the San Hieronymo Peninsula and imprisoned in the Western Wilderness. [2]
A Soviet spy steals blueprints to the Saturn V from NASA, resulting in modifications to the silos at the San Hieronymo Peninsula Soviet missile base. [2]
October The CIA plans transport of the Intercontinental Ballistic Metal Gear. [3]
October–November San Hieronymo Incident. On CIA orders, Gene leads FOX in hijacking the Intercontinental Ballistic Metal Gear during transport, and take over of an abandoned Soviet IRBM facility on the San Hieronymo Peninsula. Major Zero is arrested by the Pentagon under the charge of treason. Big Boss is also charged with treason for spearheading the revolt. [2]
November 2 Big Boss is captured by members of FOX and meets Roy Campbell. Together, the pair sets out to take down the FOX unit. [2]
Big Boss defeats old Vietnam comrade Python in battle. Big Boss encounters Frank Jaeger, now a member of FOX, again in battle and rescues him. Big Boss and Roy Campbell meet Elisa, and they discover the plans for the ICBMG. [2]
The San Hieronymo Incident ends. Big Boss successfully destroys Metal Gear RAXA, with the help of Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov. Cunningham reveals that he is actually serving the United States Department of Defense to try and discredit the CIA, and is killed in a fight with Big Boss. Gene, leader of FOX, fatally wounds Elisa. With her last breath, Elisa foresees that one of Big Boss's sons will "bring the world to ruin", while the other will "save the world." Big Boss proceeds to kill Gene, who gives him the funds he had amassed for "Army's Heaven." He later manages to destroy the ICBMG before it could activate after launching. [2]
Ocelot executes the Director of Central Intelligence. [2]

Dates Events
The Sandinista National Liberation Front, backed by the KGB and the Cuban DGI, start launching military initiatives against the Somoza regime. [4]
Para-Medic establishes the nation's first paramedic system in Seattle, Washington. [5]
The United States accumulates the remainder of the Philosophers' Legacy, thanks to Ocelot. [5][1]
Major Zero forms the Patriots, dedicated to reuniting the world in honor of The Boss's final wishes. Ocelot joins the unit, but stays in the Soviet Union as an informant. Sigint, Para-Medic, and Big Boss make up the rest of the organization. Major Zero proceeds to turn Big Boss into an idol and hero, to lead the world as a messiah-like figure. [6]
Major Zero disbands the FOX unit. [5][7]
Big Boss is ordered to become FOXHOUND commander. [3][8]
A second revision for the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty was made, with a second mass protest against it in Japan and Okinawa. [7]
Several Costa Rican protestors throw stones at the Costa Rican Parliament Building after they discover that the country bestowed mining rights to foreign companies. [4]
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is signed by America, the Soviet Union, France, England, and China, the nuclear powers at the time.
November 25 Yukio Mishima commits suicide during a failed coup d'état at the Japan Self-Defense Forces' eastern command HQ, in an attempt to restore the divinity of the Emperor. His questioning the status quo of the JSDF influences the later resignation of soldier Kazuhira Miller. [4]

April 19 The Soviet Union launches the Salyut-1, the world's first space station. [9][8]
Carrying on the traditions of Major Zero and his FOX unit, Big Boss establishes FOXHOUND. [5][9]
Big Boss rescues EVA from Hanoi, after which she join the Patriots. [6]
The Les Enfants Terribles project commences. Zero has Dr. Clark (Para-Medic) clone Big Boss in order to preserve the Patriots' icon. [9][3]
Big Boss becomes disillusioned with the Patriots. [6]
The Democratic Republic of the Congo changes its name to Zaire. [7]

March 23 ARPA is downsized and renamed DARPA. [4]
May 26 The ABM Treaty is signed by the United States of America and the Soviet Union on the limitation of the anti-ballistic missile (ABM) systems used in defending areas against missile-delivered nuclear weapons.
June 17 The Watergate scandal begins. [10][9]
August 26 – September 11 The Summer Olympic Games are held in Munich, West Germany. [4]
September 5 The Munich Massacre occurs when the terrorist organization Black September holds 11 Israeli athletes hostage during the Olympic Games, eventually killing them. As a consequence of the incident's tragic mismanagement, the GSG 9 counter-terrorism force is created. [4]
December Project Apollo ends with the Apollo-17. [9][8]
December 23 The Nicaraguan earthquake occurs, resulting in the decimation of Managua, with 5,000 killed, 20,000 wounded, and 250,000 homeless. Despite international aid and relief efforts, Nicaragua did not recover due to the Somoza regime pocketing the relief funding for themselves. [4]
Les Enfants Terribles: Solid Snake (David) and Liquid Snake (Eli) are born to surrogate mother EVA, created from Big Boss's DNA and eggs from Clark's assistant. Another survivor of the project is Solidus Snake. [5][9][7]
Big Boss leaves the Patriots after learning of Les Enfants Terribles. [6][7]
Big Boss fights alongside the Studies and Observations Group (SOG), the Green Berets and the Wild Geese. [11]
Big Boss creates the Militaires Sans Frontières (MSF). [4]
Working with the Colombian Army, Militaires Sans Frontières ambushes a guerrilla unit led by Kazuhira Miller. Miller, the only survivor, is captured and eventually recruited into MSF after Big Boss earns his respect, becoming second in command. [4]
The United States gives back Okinawa to Japan, although American bases are still concentrated. [4]
The Development Corporation of Costa Rica (CODESA) is established. [4]
The quality of French wine suffers for the next two years, resulting in drink from that period becoming undesirable. [4]

May 14 The U.S. launches Skylab, the first U.S. space station. [3]
May 16 The Day of the Jackal film adaptation is released in France and the United Kingdom. [4]
September 11 1973 Chilean coup d'état. The socialist government of the Chilean President Salvador Allende was overthrown by the Chilean military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, in a coup d’état supported by the CIA. [4]
October 6-25 Yom Kippur War. A coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria fight against Israel on both banks of the Suez Canal, Golan Heights and surrounding regions. [1]
October 7 The Battle of Latakia commences, the first instance of electronic warfare in practice. [3]
The Waseda University Department of Engineering, in Tokyo, develops the WABOT-1, the world's first bipedal walking robot. [3]
Peace Sentinel invades Costa Rica. Huey Emmerich is hired into the Peace Walker Project. [4]
Code Talker discovers a strain of arachea that metabolizes uranium. [7]

May 8 Daniel Oduber Quirós becomes the President of Costa Rica. He distances himself from the United States, limiting the privileges granted to American banks, and lifts the sanctions on Cuba. [4]
May The former comandante for the Sandinista National Liberation Front gets help from the KGB, which leads to their getting eggs and flour for food instead of just beans, as well as their bullet shortages disappearing. [4]
May 18 India becomes the sixth nuclear power as a result of Project Smiling Buddha. [7]
July The Threshold Test Ban Treaty is signed. [?]
July 28 The Alpha Group counterterrorism unit of the KGB is established. [4]
August 9 U.S. President Richard Nixon resigns. [9]
The M47 anti-tank missile enters service in the U.S. military. [4]
November 4 The Militaires Sans Frontières are hired by Paz Ortega Andrade and Ramón Gálvez Mena of the Costa Rican University for Peace, to repel rogue CIA forces operating in Costa Rica. Gálvez is exposed as a KGB agent. [4]
November 10–19 Peace Walker Incident: The Militaires Sans Frontières begin operations against Peace Sentinel in Costa Rica. The MSF destroys AI weapons Pupa and Chrysalis and recruit developer Huey Emmerich. [4]
November 21-22 The MSF destroy the AI weapon Cocoon. SALT II talks begin. The Boss's horse dies during Big Boss's attempted pursuit of Peace Walker as it flees to Nicaragua. [4]
November 23 Gerald Ford meets with Leonid Brezhnev to negotiate SALT II at Vladivostok. MSF stops Peace Walker in Nicaragua, preventing a nuclear attack with assistance from Sandinistas under Amanda Valenciano Libre and The Boss AI. Peace Sentinel leader Hot Coldman dies and secret collaborator Gálvez, a.k.a. Vladimir Zadornov, is captured by MSF. [4]
Post-November 23 Sigint proposes that machines are best suited for information control, rather than complex decision-making. [4]
MSF sends soldiers to Angola. [4]
MSF recover Peace Walker's nuclear warhead from Lake Nicaragua and arm Metal Gear ZEKE with it, becoming the world's seventh nuclear power. [4]
Vladimir Zadornov is killed during an escape attempt on MSF's Mother Base. [4]
Paz, a.k.a Pacifica Ocean, hijacks ZEKE and offers Big Boss the choice to rejoin Zero's organization, Cipher. The offer is refused and Paz prepares to launch a nuclear strike to frame MSF, forcing Big Boss to disable ZEKE. Paz falls into the ocean and disappears. [4]
November 24 Gerald Ford and Leonid Brezhnev sign the SALT II. The treaty limits the number of strategic nuclear delivery vehicles on each side to 2,400. Among that number, MIRVs are restricted to 1,320. [12][7]
December Former Prime Minister of Japan Eisaku Sato receives the Nobel Peace prize for laying forth Japan's Three Non-Nuclear Principles. [12]

December 7 MSF is dispatched to the United States Naval Prison Facility to retrieve an Intel Team agent. The mission is necessitated because the agent is a vital member of the MSF. [13]
December 21 MSF, via an undercover agent, learn of classified intel that pertains to Cipher. They immediately head to the Naval Prison Facility to retrieve the information, which is included on a cassette tape. The information on the tape reveals the existence of a Cipher-affiliated individual known only as Skull Face. [13]

December 27 A group of FSLN guerrillas seize the home of a former government official and took as hostage a handful of leading Nicaraguan officials, many of whom were Somoza relatives. The guerrillas succeed in getting 14 Sandinista prisoners released from jail and flown to Cuba along with the kidnappers. They achieve recognition as a representative of anti-Somoza sentiment. [12]

January 9 MSF is hired by the U.S. military to sabotage the Naval Prison Facility's anti-air defense turrets, due to suspicions that the base has been compromised. [13]

The IAEA requests an inspection of Mother Base, which Huey accepts despite MSF's initial reluctance. [13]
February 22 Paz's survival and imprisonment at Camp Omega is confirmed by the MSF. [13]
March Former President of Costa Rica José Figueres Ferrer admits to collaborating with the CIA. [12]
March 5–14 Chico is captured, imprisoned and tortured by XOF after attempting to rescue Paz at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. He gives XOF commander Skull Face information on MSF, after being forced to watch Paz's torture. [13]
March 14–15 XOF plant C4 explosives on MSF's Mother Base. Under Skull Face's orders, Chico sends out an SOS transmission that is picked up by MSF. Despite suspecting a trap, Big Boss commences a lone infiltration of the prison site. Paz is manipulated by Skull Face into revealing Zero's location, before being drugged and implanted with two timer bombs. [13]
March 16 Big Boss infiltrates Camp Omega and extracts Chico and Paz by chopper. XOF attacks Mother Base, during which Miller is extracted from the doomed facility. Paz awakens and jumps from the chopper to prevent the implanted bombs destroying it, but the detonation sends the helicopter into the path of another. Chico, the helicopter pilot, co-pilot and another soldier are killed. Big Boss, Miller and a medic are injured. [13][7]

Post-March 16 The three survivors are taken to a medical facility in Colombia where Big Boss and the medic fall into comas. Word of the incident reaches Zero and he hides Big Boss and the medic in a Cyprus hospital to protect them, under Ocelot's care. [7]
April 13 The Lebanese Civil War begins, with both American and Soviet involvement by supplying each side with various tanks, the former side wiping out the latter's side nine years later. [15]
April 30 The Ho Chi Minh Campaign leads to the fall of Saigon, and thus the reunification of North and South Vietnam. The Vietnam War ends. [12][7]
June 10 The Suez Canal, closed since the Six Day War of 1967, reopens after being cleared of mines from the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict. [1]
June 25 The Mozambican War of Independence ends with Mozambique attaining independence from Portugal.
July Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, takes over Cambodia and attempts to create a communist agrarian society. [16]
July 17 Soyuz 19 and Apollo 18 dock in orbit. The U.S. and Soviet Union complete their first peaceful joint activity in space. [12][7]
November The Angolan War of Independence ends.
December 2 The Laotian Civil War ends.
Skull Face is reassigned to Africa. [7]
The vocal cord parasites are resurrected through reverse evolution. [7]

Skull Face, exploiting the expertise of biotech specialist Code Talker, infects Zero with harmful parasites. Zero suffers brain damage due to Skull Face's parasite attack. [7]
Zero realizes he will eventually become a vegetable, but buys himself a few years thanks to his connections and resources. He then decides to create an A.I. system that will survive him and carry on his will - a system that would later evolve into the Patriots. The groundwork for the advanced A.I. is designed by Dr. Strangelove. [1]
June 16 The Soweto uprising occurs in South Africa. The number of protesters who police killed is usually given as 176, with estimates of up to 700. [1]
December 4 The Insurgency in Aceh begins. [6]

May 25 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is released. [6]
July 13–14 Zero flees the United States by causing a blackout in New York City. [1]
November 21 The Delta Force is established. [9][8]
The Mozambican Civil War begins, between the ruling party, the Front for Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), and the Rhodesian/South African-funded Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO). Frank Jaeger would later return to Mozambique and participate in the conflict as a RENAMO soldier, ultimately being rescued by Big Boss after suffering torture. [18]
Prime Minister of Grenada Sir Eric Gairy lobbies the UN to create an agency or department to study UFOs and extraterrestrial life, influenced by magazine photos of the Chrysalis, originating from Chico. [19]
An underground nuclear test site is discovered beneath the Kalahari Desert. Bowing to international pressure, the South African government abandons the site. [17][7]
A diminished Zero visits Big Boss in order to say goodbye, then disappears completely, never to be seen in public again. He will eventually lose all cognitive functions. [7]

February The Iranian Revolution leads to the Iran Hostage Crisis. [17][7]
Eli escapes his handlers in Africa and disappears. [7]
July 19 The FSLN overthrows Somoza in an armed uprising, helping realize the Nicaraguan Revolution. Somoza defects in the aftermath, ensuring the Nicaragua Revolution comes to fruitition, and is assassinated the following year. [12]
November Towards the end of the Rhodesian Civil War, Frank Jaeger rescues and adopts a young Naomi Hunter, after killing her parents. [9][3]
December 12 The Rhodesian Civil War comes to an end.
The Vela satellite observes double flash in South African waters (Indian Ocean). [7]
December 24 The first stages of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan begins. [12]
December 27 A new Cold War begins with the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, bringing an end to Détente. Revolver Ocelot participates in the invasion as a Spetsnaz operative, earning the moniker "Shalashaska" from the Afghan rebels. [10]
The Khmer Rouge is driven out of Cambodia by the Vietnamese. A reported third of the entire population were killed under the regime, and the mass grave sites become known as the "killing fields." [16]
The American Technician's assistant was sent to Central Africa. [1]

Late 1970s

Dates Events
Stealth missile technology is researched. [10]
Iraq allows nuclear inspectors from Russia and Bulgaria to determine whether or not they have nuclear weapons. [10]
A team of top specialists (including Strangelove) officially begin development on what will one day become the Patriots' AIs. [1]
