After the cutscene where Naked Snake was tortured by Volgin and when the soldiers stripped Snake of his equipment, how come they didn't also take away his codec equipment?

When I watched the story of MGS I thought that the Codec was like some kind of futuristic earpiece since Campbell says it stimulates the bones of your ear, but apparently some devs have made an actual communication device that's put inside your mouth, so maybe that's what the team intended the Codec to be?? I'm still confused if its an earpiece or a tooth walkie talkie
