After the cutscene where Naked Snake was tortured by Volgin and when the soldiers stripped Snake of his equipment, how come they didn't also take away his codec equipment?
It starts with this little tidbit seen in the timeline at the end of Ground Zeroes:
This site exists in real life. It’s called Vastrap.
• Some context: South Africa’s nuclear program only existed to basically strongarm the United States into resolving their conflicts with Eastern (Communist) Bloc nations; primarily, in the event the Border War in Namibia spilled over into South Africa proper. Despite never intending to actually use their nukes, they had a purpose. Without a site to develop and test them, and with the international condemnation that came with the 1979 Vela Incident, South Africa was between a rock and a hard place.
• Enter Skull Face and XOF.
Sometime following Vela, Skull Face takes advantage of the situation by offering a deal with the government: allow XOF, under the guise of “South African Natural Resources,” to occupy Vastrap and use it to develop and test their parasite research, in exchange for acting as the country’s anticommunist deterrent and apartheid enforcer. Despite being a signatory of the 1975 Biological Weapons Convention, South Africa was desperate for a deterrent, and agreed.
• This status quo would remain in place until Skull Face’s death in 1984. With it, XOF would rapidly lose their grip on Afghanistan and Central Africa. Vastrap would become their new HQ, a hideout to lay low. The soldiers seen ambushing Eli in the cut Mission 51 would have been deployed from Vastrap.
According to my theorizing, Chapter 3 of MGSV would’ve shown how Diamond Dogs would become Outer Heaven.
• The real Big Boss relays intel to Ocelot about XOF’s Vastrap hideout, and also that he (Ishmael) forged a new deal with South Africa to have Diamond Dogs wipe XOF out, capture the desert test site for themselves, and take over their contract. So, Diamond Dogs launches a full-scale invasion and succeeds. When clearing the underground tunnels, which XOF would have expanded greatly, Venom and Ocelot discover that XOF hired a new scientist to replace Huey: Dr. Drago Pettrovich Mandar.
He was being forced to create a new Metal Gear to replace Sahelanthropus - one far simpler and cheaper to construct, use, and maintain. Intrigued by this, and knowing Sally was a paper tiger at best and a liability at worst, Venom and Ocelot agree to have Madnar continue his work under them, with full access to Huey’s old lab and everything he left behind when he was kicked out.
• Under orders from “Ishmael,” Vastrap becomes the new Mother Base of Diamond Dogs - Outer Heaven.
Meanwhile, the Seychelles facility is relegated to being just a FOB, with its important facilities and assets moved to the mainland. Kaz Miller is infuriated by this, seeing as he raised up DD from basically nothing and now everything he built up was just being tossed aside; he eventually leaves for early retirement.
• Once settled in, a cover story is published to the world about Big Boss supposedly retiring from mercenary work to rejoin FOXHOUND. Ocelot departs to help Big Boss in this endeavor and also round up highly skilled mercenaries to act as “Ahab’s” right-hand men. Venom takes a break from being a body double, and is now just himself, though he hides from public eye since he might need to take up the mantle again in the future…
• Outer Heaven quickly becomes a force to be reckoned with. After rescuing a local architectural engineer named Kyle Schneider from rogue XOF remnants, they have him lead the efforts to expand the place into a true fortress.
• Madnar reverse-engineers Huey’s Walker Gear concept, making it much bigger, with a closed cockpit, and nuclear-equipped. TX-55 is born.
Note the vague similarities to Walker Gear, such as the head shape.
• Dr. Madnar proposes an idea to use special robotic surgical instruments, combined with prototype nanomachine injections, to conduct an operation to finally remove Venom Snake’s shrapnel horn without causing a brain hemorrhage. Venom agrees to it, and it is a success.
Note: this image was supposedly extracted from MGSV’s files, showing an aged Venom Snake without the horn. You can faintly see a scar on the forehead where it would be.
But the nanomachines are early prototypes, with side effects not being immediately clear. They end up manifesting in “Ahab’s” personality doing a complete 180; he becomes sadistic and downright evil, embracing his public persona as a “demon.” Madnar and Schneider grow to dislike working under him. Venom begins concealing his face by wearing a devilish masquerade mask with a single horn where the shrapnel used to be.
Venom also begins acting erratically, and not in line with Big Boss’s original plans. BB tries to resolve this diplomatically, but the nanomachines just seem to make Venom worse and worse.
• In 1995, South Africa - now under a new government - agrees to the UN’s demands (in the MG universe) to completely shut down their nuclear weapons programs and make the creation or storage of them anywhere within their borders illegal. In response to this, Venom Snake has Outer Heaven declare independence from the country, becoming the world’s first “mercenary republic,” with plans to launch an insurrection against Cipher. This draws the suspicions and fears of the outside world. The United Nations Security Council demands that a stealth operations unit investigate. The United States selects FOXHOUND for the job. Big Boss secretly decides to have Venom Snake be assassinated so he can quietly take the reins of Outer Heaven himself. He dispatches Gray Fox to accomplish this, but he’s captured. Desperate, Big Boss selects his top performing rookie, Solid Snake, for Operation Intrude N313.
And the rest is history…
If you’ve read this far, congrats! Sorry for such a long post, but I’ve been itching to get this out there somewhere haha.
I saw someone else talk about this and thought it was cool. I’ll do this in bullet-point form:
• Big Boss and Venom Snake initially continued working together from a distance after MGSV, but to help sell the deception of being BB’s body-double (in the event he’d need to assume that identity again, which he would in MG1,) he enlists Dr. Madnar to undergo an experimental surgery using robots and nanomachine injections to finally remove the shrapnel horn without causing a brain hemorrhage. By the power of “NANOMACHINES SON!”, it works.
Pictured below: Supposedly extracted from MGSV’s files: an aged Venom Snake without the horn. You can faintly see a scar where the horn would be.
• However, the nanomachines are experimental, with side-effects not being immediately clear. They end up damaging Venom Snake’s psyche and kinda make him go insane. He becomes ruthless and sadistic, embracing his reputation as a “demon.” He begins acting erratically, and not in line with Big Boss’ plans. This begins to sour their relationship.
• Operation Intrude N313 would be the climax of the wedge driven between Venom and BB. It would be BB sending Solid Snake to basically assassinate Venom so that then BB could take over Outer Heaven for himself. However, Solid “goes too far” by discovering the existence of Metal Gear and their plans to use it against the United States in order to take down Cipher/The Patriots. Venom does one last “F you” to BB by pretending to be him when confronting Solid, in order to destroy his reputation. With Outer Heaven and Metal Gear destroyed, the real Big Boss is forced to secretly start over in Zanzibar Land/Tselinoyarsk.
What do y’all think?
Big Boss from the Metal Gear series is the perfect example of a villain who's not right because he secretly tries to accomplish something good but because he exposes that the idea of doing good was doomed from the beginning. The reason why Big Boss is the unequivocal bad guy of the series is because he's the leader of a rogue military group that seeks to plunge the world into an endless conflict. This said, his vision of a world where everyone is a soldier fighting for themselves comes from a rather sensible and sympathetic place. As a former member of the US military force, Big Boss experienced the misery of a soldier's life firsthand. From the disgrace of his own mentor to the many injustices against regular combatants, the boss has seen it all and realized that war cannot be stopped, but what's worse, the people fighting in it fight only for nations that don't even care about them. Whenever Big Boss is confronted for his crimes, he doesn't try to act like a hero among the fallen soldiers. He simply lets his adversaries know the side they fight for isn't any less bloodthirsty than him, only more heartless.
Name: Republic of Zanzibaristan (stan is from Persian for “land,” so it’s literally “Land of the Zanzibar.”) In Tajik Cyrillic: Республикаи Занзибаристон
IRL Location: Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, eastern Tajikistan
Flag during Big Boss’ reign:
(The symbol of Outer Heaven would be reused for Zanzibaristan’s only legal political party in 1999, the “Outer Heaven Party.”)
Official language(s:) None, but Zanzibari (fictional language for the also-fictional Zanzibari ethnic group) is the most commonly spoken, along with Tajik, Dari, Uyghur, and Russian.
Religion: None mandated. The population is highly atheist due to their Soviet past, but a substantial minority (many of them Fundamentalist extremists) are Muslims.
Motto: “A nation by soldiers, for soldiers.”
Anthem: The Zanzibar Land anthem but extended.
Demonym: Zanzibar (political, Занзибарская,) Zanzibari (ethnic, Занзибарский.)
Government: Semi-presidential constitutional “mercenary republic” (de-jure,) authoritarian military junta (de-facto.)
Head of State/Government: President-for-Life “Big Boss,” since 1997.
Currency: Zanzibar Zanje (Зане)
History Summary: The Turkic people called the Zanzibari have lived in the region for centuries but never had a modern nation-state to call their own until the 1990’s with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Under Soviet rule, they were an autonomous region of the Tajik SSR, serving as a religious cushion separating the rest of the Union from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The events of Operation: Snake Eater caused the USSR to lose interest in the region, letting it fall into financial decay. During the Soviet-Afghan War, Zanzibaristan served as a staging ground for Soviet entry into Afghanistan. Under the reign of Mikhail Gorbachev, Zanzibaristan was finally reorganized to be its own SSR within the Soviet Union, but this of course didn’t last long. After Soviet collapse, Zanzibaristan almost immediately was thrown into a war for independence against neighboring Tajikistan, who saw the land as rightfully theirs. It would be fought throughout the mid-90’s, with the Tajiks slowly but surely winning. But then in 1995, a mercenary company fleeing from South Africa would offer their services to the Zanzibari, which they would accept. The mercenaries would singlehandedly turn the conflict around in their favor, winning Zanzibaristan their independence in 1997 and repopularizing PMC’s. The Zanzibari War for Independence would also be known as the “Mercenary War.” But out of nowhere, the mercenaries do a coup and take over the government for themselves. The old government rallies with Muslim rebels to form the “Free Zanzibar Coalition” as an armed resistance. Big Boss eventually reveals that he’s still alive, and Zanzibaristan begins invading nuclear disposal sites around the world…
I've been searching throughout the internet to figure out how to unlock this suit, but I found no clear answer. So, I now turn towards the wisdom of my fellow Fandom users. How do you unlock this suit? At what point in the game is it available, and what prerequisites are needed in order to unlock it? I don't care too much if spoilers are involved (I have a hard enough time following the story for these games anyway).
Here's a picture I found online of the suit I'm talking about (since there is more than one "sneaking suit" in the game)
Name: MGS: Legacy of the Damned
One-word theme: “LEGACY” (The game’s about Big Boss embracing the legacy the Boss left for him in order to save the world from nuclear war again by building up his first private army from nothing. Plus the whole incident is an elaborate plot for Zero to get the missing half of the Philosophers’ Legacy to create The Patriots and Les Enfants Terribles.)
Setting: Still the same San Jerónimo Peninsula in Colombia. One difference though is this game’s version of “Mother Base” would be a bootleg Green Beret camp in the jungle that becomes “Camp Foxhound,” named after BB’s ragtag group fighting against FOX. By the end of the game, it would become yet another one of the U.S.’ foreign bases controlled by the newly created official FOXHOUND Unit.
Plot summary: In 1970, the FOX Unit, which has grown substantially from its humble origins in MGS3 thanks to U.S. government funding, goes rogue and takes over a hidden Soviet missile base in Colombia, “OKB-810,” designed as a replacement place to store Eastern Bloc nukes in the Western Hemisphere after the Cuban Missile Crisis, but gradually abandoned due to Détente and now relegated to just being a place for the USSR to keep its disgraced personnel, like Major Raikov, whose power and influence in the military practically vanished after the “death” of Colonel Volgin. Naked Snake, who for now refuses the name of “Big Boss,” has been wandering the world as a gun-for-hire trying to come to terms with The Boss’ death when he’s suddenly kidnapped by FOX, who want him to cough up the missing half of the Philosophers’ Legacy. Long-story short, Snake reluctantly gets caught up in a power struggle between the bickering American Philosophers and Zero’s growing lust for power and control. At the end of the game, he’ll help establish FOXHOUND, but leave the organization along with his closest followers to become mercenaries after discovering the Les Enfants Terribles and leaving The Patriots. The epilogue has BB meet Kaz Miller, and sets the stage for the creation of Militaires Sans Frontiéres…
Enemy faction: the FOX Unit of course, which has grown from a small infiltration unit into a decently-sized army. Even the regular troops in the rank-and-file know CQC, so it’s best not to fight them up close. Their standard uniforms are tiger-stripe camouflage reminiscent of BB’s attire in Snake-Eater, and use the same CODEC system to communicate with each other.
Bosses:
• Gray Fox: Alternatively known as the “Perfect Soldier,” a master swordsman from Mozambique with seemingly inhuman reflexes.
• Cunning Hawk: FOX’s chief interrogator, a former CIA operative who joined the FOX Rebellion after being relegated to office work following the loss of his leg. When in battle, he likes to use a flying platform to get around efficiently.
• Mystic Bat: The ESP specialist of FOX, singlehandedly responsible for converting much of OKB-810’s former personnel to their cause. Plays mind games with her opponents to break their psyches. Joined the Rebellion because she was rescued by FOX’s new leader from an East German laboratory.
• Naked Python: The leader of the Rebellion, forged by the CIA and the American Philosophers into an “Anti-Snake” in the event of Big Boss following in his mentor’s footsteps by defecting to the USSR. He also learned CQC from The Boss, teaching it to the rest of the Unit when he was reawakened after being critically injured in Vietnam. His injuries induced hyperthermia which means his body can’t stay cool, so he wears a specialized sneaking suit that regulates his core body temperature. He’s modified it to be able to weaponize the suit’s coolant to freeze the environment around him if he’s in an enclosed space. He hates Big Boss because Python himself was forced to live in his shadow, the first “Phantom” of him, if you will.
• Metal Gear APOLLO: The world’s first Metal Gear, created by American scientists (including a certain “Dr. Emmerich”) based on blueprints and design documents drafted by Alexander Leonovich Granin, whose works were rejected by the USSR due to not having the technology or the money to create it in favor of Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov’s Shagohod. APOLLO looks similar to REX, but combines the mech with a miniaturized Saturn Rocket called the “Saturn II” so the Metal Gear can launch itself into low orbit before dropping back down anywhere on Earth to deliver nuclear payloads.
That’s what I have so far. Let me know y’all’s thoughts.

MGSHSAU on AO3. The author is listed as orphan_account. One of the best pieces of Metal Gear fanfiction, if not one of the best pieces of fanfiction, if not one of the best pieces of fiction/writing ever written
