I was at a friends party back in 2010, my friend’s older brother and his friends were playing Super Smash Bros Brawl on a Wii and were doing the sub space story mode. I saw a cutscene of Samus rescuing an imprisoned pikachu and watched as they played, they won’t let me or my friend play sadly but a few weeks later i came over again and this time we played Brawl together without his older brother getting in the way, i loved it but sucked at it because all we had were wii remotes. We played on custom stages and as different characters. One time i came over i chose the character called “Snake” because i thought he looked bad ass. When i played i never understood his moveset and only used grenades, punches, the cypher and the Nikita. I never really played as him after that until years later when Ultimate was announced and i saw his return, i decided to give him another chance now that he had returned. I tried him out and learned about all sorts of mechanics like the c4 and rpg7, he eventually became my main in January 2019. At the time i had taken a habit of researching different game franchises so i could learn everything about them and become an encyclopedia for that franchise. What pushed me to research Metal Gear was the description of an old YouTube poop series called “Gun Fight” which had a new part of the series that had come out in like 2018 and the description had a quote that puzzled me but it later made sense. The quote that was the entire description of the video was “Kept you waiting huh?” I was confused so i read one of the comments that mentioned that the quote was from Metal Gear so I watched a video that showed every time that catchphrase was used, i then released that this franchise was represented in Smash Bros and began researching all the games starting with the original game which i discovered was on the Msx2 and had a crappy nes port which i recognized due to having watched an old Avgn episode back in 2015 that was about the nes port. I soaked up tons of information and ruined most of the franchise for myself due to spoiling basically everything for myself instead of playing all the games in order blind, i regret that choice to this day. When August came around one of my Dad’s friends was talking about nes games and i joined in on the conversation because i happen to know a ton about retro games and consoles, he mentioned one of his favorites “Metal Gear” which prompted me to start talking about it and also tell him that the version he played wasn’t the original version. He was impressed with my knowledge and told me this: “You’re mission... Is to beat Metal Gear!” I beat the nes version on an emulator with no save states and only a map in two days and had my Dad send him pictures, he was impressed with my skills. I know devote a lot of time playing mgs games and enjoying the lore. I have grown to feel pity for Smash Bros fans because they will probably never play mgs which saddens me, i just can’t convince them to play it because they don’t care. Smash fans think it’s a Call of Duty type game which is not even close to what the franchise stands for. The smash community has lots of character requests for franchises already represented in Smash like a new Sonic character or Waluigi, they always demand it like it needs to happen or else they’ll send death threats to Mr. Sakurai. I just ask for Venom Snake even though i have little hope that the character will get in, he doesn’t even have a spirit, only Big Boss and Naked Snake. I’m waiting for the smash dlc to be finished so i can stop having hope for Venom Snake in Smash, once it’s done i can move on. The smash community will never appreciate mgs. If only mgs came to switch then more people would try it but sadly Konami has no desire, just pachinko machines and crappy mobile games.. Mgs is a beautiful saga that has changed my life and helped me improve has a person thanks to its lessons, thank you Mr. Kojima. Kojima is God!
